1 WaG #4 Homophones

2 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the correct use of homophones. What definitions can you identify? 1a – Many students say that their favorite novel is John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars. 1b – There are many other great John Green books. 1c – Please turn your reading forms in over there. 1d – She said they’re due on October 21.

3 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the correct use of homophones. What definitions can you identify? 2a – Is that your football? 2b – Make sure you’re on time to practice. 3a – The flu is making its way around the class. 3b – You may think writing essays is difficult, but it’s going to get easier with practice.

4 Homophone Notes – Get them right!  homophones  words that sound the same, but have different meanings & different spellings their = possessive pronoun; belongs to them they’re = contraction for “they are” there = location word or sentence starter your = possessive pronoun; belongs to you you’re = contraction for “you are” its = possessive pronoun; belongs to it it’s = contraction for “it is”

What definitions can you identify? 4a – I’m planning to go watch today’s game. 4b – I’m going to the field at about 4pm. 4c – Do you want to come too? 4d – No, I have too much reading to catch up on. 4e – They have two games next week.

6 Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the correct use of homophones. What definitions can you identify? 5a – I don’t have any homework except for math. 5b – Use strong evidence so that your reader will accept your argument. 6a – Missing assignments can drastically affect your grade. 6b – What will be the effect of last week’s rain? 7a – I have less to do than you, so I’ll get us seats. 7b – Do your homework and then meet us there.

7 Homophone Notes – Get them right!  homophones  words that sound the same, but have different meanings & different spellings to = begins an infinitive verb (to eat) to = begins a preposition phrase (to the store) too = adverb meaning “also” or “excessive” two = the number

8 Homophone Notes – Get them right! except = preposition that means “but” or “with the exclusion of” accept = verb meaning “to take” or “to agree” affect = verb meaning “to influence” or “to cause a change in” effect = noun that means “a result” than = used to compare things then = adverb meaning “at that time” or “after that”

9 Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook and be sure to choose the correct homophone. Are you going to (their, they’re, there) party? No, I have (too, to, two) much homework. (Your, You’re) sweet, but (their, they’re, there) not very nice. The machine couldn’t perform without (it’s, its) orders, and the workers didn’t have the same (affects, effects) The coach was honored (too, to, two) (accept, except) the award on behalf of the whole team. My sister is taller (then, than) me, even though she’s (to, too, two) years younger.

10 Now add 3 of your own examples that correctly use some of the homophones we’ve reviewed…
