1 Body Cavities Ms. Kimber 2/18/2015

2 Anatomical Terms Anterior is… Posterior is… Lateral is… Medial is…
In front or in the front part: Posterior is… Behind, in back, or in the rear: Lateral is… Left to right, side, farther from median: Medial is… Middle or center: Anatomical Position is… Standing erect, face and palms forward, arms at side

3 Tissues Epithelial Connective Outer layer of skin
Lining of air sacs in the lungs Secretion, absorption, ducts of glands Binds skin to internal organ Layer beneath skin Circulates through the body, delivers oxygen Provides insulation (fat)

4 Continuing of Tissues…
Muscle Nerve Connect muscles to bones Walls of the heart Transmits signals, nerve impulses Support cells

5 What is a Body Cavity? A Body Cavity is any fluid-filled space in a multicellular organism other than those of vessels: term usually refers to the space located between an animal's outer covering (epidermis), and the outer lining of the gut cavity

6 Body Cavities in the Human Body
Abdominal Cavity Pelvic Cavity Ventral Cavity Thoracic Cavity Pleural Cavity Pericardial Cavity Dorsal Cavity Cranial Cavity Vertebral Cavity

7 Abdominal Cavity Contains the…
stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and intestines (small and large), ovaries (in female): the peritoneal cavity (peritoneum) surrounds the abdominal organs:

8 Body Cavities… Pelvic Cavity Ventral Cavity Anterior surface of torso:
Contains colon, rectum, urinary bladder, uterus (in females) Found in the Abdominopelvic Cavity Imaginary line that runs across hipbones divides the body into the abdominal and pelvic cavities. Ventral Cavity Anterior surface of torso: divided by diaphragm muscle into upper thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity:

9 Thoracic Cavity- the chest; contains trachea, bronchi, lungs, esophagus, heart and great blood vessels, thymus gland, lymph nodes, and nerves: Pleural Cavity Surround each lung Pericardial Cavity contains the heart

10 Contains the spinal cord
Dorsal Cavity- Bones of the cranial portion of the skull and vertebral column, toward the dorsal side of the body: Vertebral Cavity Contains the spinal cord Cranial Cavity Contains the brain

11 Let’s Work Hard for the Assessment Tomorrow!!!!
