How did this benefit the U.S.? 2.Why was Alaska an important territory for the U.S.? 3.Why did the U.S. want control of the Philippines? 4.How did the Spanish-American War end? (What was the outcome?) 5.What are the advantages and disadvantages of imperialism? (List two for each!) 6.THINKER: In YOUR opinion, should U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam, be incorporated into the union? Why or why not?

2 Debate – Should the U.S. practice Imperialism? The United States’ practice of imperialism has been extremely controversial. As a class, we are going to debate whether imperialism was a good or bad thing. The class will be split up into six groups. Three are PRO imperialism and three are ANTI imperialism. Choose a spokesperson In your groups, write a speech that includes the following:

3 Imperialism Debate GOOD: gain of territory, resources, power, wealth, spread technology and religion; step towards “globalization” BAD: moral grounds, loss of culture, “power-hungry,” taking advantage of other countries, loss of natural resources, oppressed, leaves them dependent

4 Speech Outline Intro –Hook (Grab the audience’s attention) –Thesis Body (three arguments) 1.Middle 2.Weakest 3.Strongest Closing –Summarize –Lasting Impression

5 Imperialism Debate Everyone in the group is helping to write the speech. The rest of the group needs to have questions ready to ask the other side. In order to be a good debater, you need to understand both sides (Why it is good, why it is bad) Some of your questions might be answered during the speech, but it might spark other questions too – write down any questions you have. Each person will turn in 3-5 questions they want to ask the other side. This will be turned in for credit! Both sides are going to present their arguments before the floor is open for questioning. Everyone is getting participation points for the day – you must speak, ask a question, or respond to a comment to receive those points.
