Bellringer Grades Create a frequency distribution based on this data.

Today We are going to define our next research method: Correlational Research

Why should I care? Correlations are all around us. Money, love, health, success, hatred and learning. The relationships in this world are surprising and interesting. You sound cool knowing them.

Vocabulary 1.Correlation: relationship 2.Manipulate: to change 3.Variable: something that can be changed 4.Causation: to cause something to happen

Did you know? Ice cream consumption leads to murder.

Correlation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McdD9N g4VnY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McdD9N g4VnY How would you describe the relationship between the season and the number of injuries people get?

How would you describe the relationship between…?

Correlational Research: investigates how two variables are related. – How does the SEASON relate to the NUMBER OF INJURIES people get – How do IQ TEST SCORES relate to AMOUNT OF MONEY people make at their job? – How does STRESS relate to DISEASE?

Positive Correlation: variables go up or down together Negative Correlation: variables go opposite directions – Common confusion: positive is NOT good. Negative is NOT bad. – Think POSITIVE = TOGETHER, NEGATIVE = SEPARATE WAYS

POSITIVE NEGATIVE

Practice As the amount of tooth-brushing goes up, the amount of cavities goes down – Negative correlation (separate ways) As the amount of caffeine I drink goes up, the amount I have to pee goes up. – Positive correlation (TOGETHER!)

Group Practice Label the following correlations as positive or negative. 1.More hours of studying correlate with higher test scores in school. 2.Fewer hours of sleep correlate with lower test scores in school. 3.The more proficient 4 th grade reading scores, the less money the US puts into building prisons. 4.The more Cheetos I eat, the more I bite my nails. 5.The lower the temperature, the less visits to the hospital are recorded.

Independent Practice Label the following correlations as positive or negative. 1.The more scary movies I watch, the more nightmares I get at night. 2.The more hours I spend in the weight room, the less anxiety I feel during the day. 3.Lower rates of eating fast food correlate with lower levels of obesity. 4.The more you hit your head against a wall, the more likely you are to get a concussion.

Scatterplot: graph used to show correlation between 2 variables. – What are the 2 variables? Values go UP Values go UP 

Explaining the Correlation As _____________________ (increases/decreases), ___________________________ (increases/decreases). As a result, _________________________ may be correlated with ______________________.

Correlation Variables: Correlation? As years of education increases, the average income of a person also increases.

Practice Variables: Correlation?

Causation? Over the weekend, New York City saw its warmest weather so far this year, and as it turns out, the weekend was also marked with increased levels of violence. The sweltering Big Apple had 25 shootings in the span of 48 hours, leading many to believe that hot temperatures cause shootings. – What are the 2 variables? – Positive or negative correlation? – SO HEAT CAUSES SHOOTINGS? – Correlation does NOT mean causation The warmer the weather, the more likely people are to go outside at night

Correlation? Ice cream consumption leads to murder.

CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION

Correlation? Ice cream consumption leads to murder.

Correlation .977 Marriage rate in Virginia

Scatter Plot Practice Ruben measured how many minutes he meditated each night and the number of hours he slept. Plot the data in a scatter plot.

Positive or negative correlation? Explain this correlation. What can we infer from these results?

Exit Ticket Label the following correlations as positive or negative 1.More hours of practice and higher points scored in a basketball game 2.More Big Macs eaten and more weight gained 3.More hours of exercise and lower chances of heart disease 4.More nail biting and shorter nails 5.More absences from school and lower graduation rate

Exit Ticket Exam 1:

Homework – Correlation Article Read the short articles and respond to the short answer questions on a separate sheet of paper. Exam 1: September 26 & 29
