3 Aim To support teachers in developing their capacity to implement the CRED Policy

4 Outcomes for Day One Participants will: Enhance their understanding of the CRED Policy Develop understanding of the four key CRED concepts Have an increased understanding of the challenges relating to implementing the CRED policy

8 Section 75 of the NI Act 1998 Requires public bodies in carrying out their functions, powers and duties, to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity: between persons of different religious belief, political opinion, racial group, age, marital status or sexual orientation; between men and women generally; between persons with a disability and persons without; and between persons with dependants and persons without. Without prejudice to these obligations, public bodies are also required to have regard to the desirability of promoting good relations between persons of different religious belief, political opinion or racial group.

9 CRED Policy: Rationale Evolution of Community Relations Policy since 1980s Society in NI has become more diverse in last few decades Sectarianism, racism and bullying are examples of social problems, which still need to be addressed in society

10 CRED Policy: Context Programme for Government seeks to ‘build a strong and shared community’ NI Curricula (formal and informal) aims to develop in young people knowledge and understanding of the challenges and opportunities they may encounter in an increasingly diverse society Issues of Diversity included in Local and Citizenship (part of LLW) and PDMU (Personal Development and Mutual Understanding)

11 CRED Policy: Aim Contribute to improving relations between communities by educating children & young people to develop self respect, respect for others, promote equality & work to eliminate discrimination Provide formal & non-formal opportunities to build relationships with those of different backgrounds & traditions within resources available

12 CRED Policy: Objectives Develop understanding and respect for rights, equality and diversity of all without discrimination Value and respect difference and engage positively with it Equip children/young people with required skills attitudes and behaviors
