1 Do Now When have you heard the word “evidence”?
Can you think of any synonyms? What does evidence mean in writing?

2 Embedding and Citing Evidence
7th Grade Language Arts

3 Why do writers use Direct Quotes?
To develop additional ideas to support the thesis Writers use specific evidence, such as paraphrased and/or direct quotations

4 Direct Quotation The exact words of an author.
Note: A direct quotation is placed inside “quotation marks”

5 How do we Cite a Direct Quotation?
“Direct Quotation” (Author’s Last Name Page #). Example: It has not been proven that violent video games negatively affect children. According to the article “It’s Perverse, but It’s Also Pretend,” “Teenage boys may be more interested in the chain saws, but there’s no evidence that this leads to violent behavior in real life.” (Olson 153).

6 When using direct quotes…
Avoid plagiarism by paraphrasing or using direct quotes To embed a direct quotation, use TLQC format (transition, lead-in, quotation, citation). For example: It has not been proven that violent video games negatively affect children. According to the article “It’s Perverse, but It’s Also Pretend,” “Teenage boys may be more interested in the chain saws, but there’s no evidence that this leads to violent behavior in real life” (Olson 153).

7 TLQC T: Transition L: Lead-In Q: Quotation C: Citation
