2  Here is what to do in case of the following drills… › Earthquake drill: get under your desks › Fire drill: exit my room and go to your right, down the front stairwell and go out the front door to the grassy area next to the marquee. (It is important that you stay with me and your class-I have to account for you)  Sometimes we may have to use an alternate route. This would be to turn left out of my door and exit the building through the doors by the stairwell. YOU WILL STILL MEET IN THE GRASS AREA NEXT TO THE MARQUEE. › Lockdown drill: turn the lights off, everyone must be next to wall where my desk is located, you MUST be quite › Tornado drill: you will exit my room and go to your right, down the front stairwell, and assume position in the hallway next to the auditorium (you have to go through the door).

3  If you have your binder with you today…  Label your dividers as follows: › Put your assessment data sheet in the front of your dividers. 1. Bell Ringers 2. Grammar 3. Vocabulary 4. Notes/Resources/Literary Toolbox 5. Assessments

4  Complete the following sentence: › The boy is holding a _____,_____ balloon. (Think size, color, etc.)

5 Discuss how you completed the sentence. What does this mean? “The limits of my language means limits of my world.”

6 Make a page in your grammar notes to keep a running list of grammar rules. 1. Commas in a series: › Use commas to separate words phrases or clauses in a series.  EXAMPLE: Meanwhile people on benches chatted with each other, looked out over the river, or tossed crumbs to the ducks.  Write on your own paper. Complete sentences 1-4 marking the commas in the correct place.

7  Examine your 8 th grade On Demand Scores and create a smart goal to improve your writing for your 10 th grade On Demand. › Fill out the goal sheet and place in your binder under the assessments tab.

8  Please follow the directions provided.  You will have 40 minutes to complete.  Please use any pre-writing graphic organizer you feel comfortable using. › Pre-write on a scrap piece of paper. › Write your response on your own paper. You should only use the front and back of one page.

9  Score your writing sample using the following: › 4=AWESOME-I can teach someone else how to do this. › 3=GOT IT- I know how to complete it, but I could use help improving. › 2=OKAY- I know how to do some parts, but I still need help. › 1=NEED HELP- I have no idea how to do this. › Be honest, where do you really feel you are.

10  Finish Up 1 st Day Activities › Complete the Reading/Writing Inventory › Color Personality Test

11  Our first couple of units will be dealing with identity. › Who Am I?  With a partner brainstorm on a piece of paper, what you think the word identity means.  Be prepared to share with the class.
