1 Welcome to Mt. Sylvia Missionary Baptist Church
serving our community for 132 years Song of Degree Psalm 126

2 Psalms 126:1-6 (1) A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. (2) Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. (3) The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

3 Psalms 126:1-6 (4) Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south. (5) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. (6) He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

4 Song of Degrees Meaning: song of steps a title given to each of these fifteen psalms, The probable origin of this name is the circumstance that these psalms came to be sung by the people on the ascents or goings up to Jerusalem to attend the three great festivals (Deut. 16: 16).

5 Song of Degrees They were well fitted for being sung by the way from their peculiar form, and from the sentiments they express. “They are characterized by brevity, by a key-word, … More than half of them are cheerful, and all of them hopeful.” They are sometimes called “Pilgrim Songs.” Four of them were written by David, one (127) by Solomon, and the rest are anonymous.

6 Psalms 126:1-6 (1) A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. 7 (4) Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south.
Psalms 126:1-6 (4) Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south.

8 (5) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Psalms 126:1-6 (5) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. (6) He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

9 Psalms 127:1-4 (1) A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (2) It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. (3) Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. (4) As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
