1 PROGRAMME FOR THE 2010 ROUND OF CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE LAND TENURE AND LAND USE IN AGRICULTURAL CENSUS Laupua.Fiti March 2009

2 Land Tenure, what is it? Refers to the arrangements in which a holder operates land on a holding A relationship of a person/group of persons or institution with land

3 LAND TENURE TYPES (1) Legal ownership or legal owner- like possession Land rights that provides statutory security of tenure Holder’s household possesses title or ownership Heredity Tribal or traditiional

4 LAND TENURE TYPES (2) Non legal or non legal owner-like possession Land operated with out interruption for long period without any form of legal ownership, title, long term lease or payment of rent Land rented free, but can not be sold or mortgage. State land operated without any legal right Land operated under traditional form or tenure not recogonised by the state

5 LAND TENURE TYPES (3) Land rented from someone else For an agreed sum of money and/or produce Share of the produce Exchange for service.

6 LAND USE TYPES Refers to the activities carried out on the land making up the holding with the intention of obtaining products and/or benefits. Seven recommended land use types

7 LAND USE TYPES (1) land under temporary crops Land used for growing crops with less than one year growing cycle (2) land under meadows and pastures Land temporary cultivated with herbaceous forage crops for mowing and pasture.

8 LAND USE TYPES (3) Land temporarily under ble land fallow Arable land at prolong rest before re cultivated. This may be part of the holding’s crop rotation system, flood damage, lack of water, unavailability of inputs ect. Land is not considered fallow unless it been or expected to be kept at least for one year.

9 LAND USE TYPES (4) Land under permanent crops Land cultivated with long term crops which do not have to be replanted for several years.

10 LAND USE TYPES (5) land under permanent meadows and pastures Land used permanently (5 years or more) to grow herbaceous forage crops through cultivation or naturally.

11 LAND USE TYPES (6) Forest and wooded land of trees Forest – natural and plantation forest; crown cover of more the 10% of tree able to reach mature height of 5 meters; temporary land not under trees but expected to revert to forest Wooded land – crown cover of 5-10% for trees able to reach a height of 5 meters or more at maturity; crown cover of more than 10% not able to reach a eight of 5 meters at maturity; shrub or bush cover of more than 10%,

12 LAND USE TYPES (7) other land- all other land of the holding not elsewhere classified. Eg land under water, wasteland, building, roads, parks.
