“RUDE” (Magic) Age: Teens & Adults Grammar Focus: First Conditionals

NOTE FOR THE TEACHER: The song “ RUDE” doesn´t have the first conditional but can be used for that purpose, so you can show students the slide with the lyrics but you don´t necessarily need photocopies. This activity is supposed to be assigned after students practiced the FIRST CONDITIONAL long enough, so that they perform the task well. You can use it as a wrap-up activity if you will.

RUDE (Magic) Saturday morning jumped out of bed And put on my best suit Got in my car and raced like a jet All the way to you Knocked on your door With heart in my hand To ask you a question 'Cause I know that You're an old-fashioned man Yeah, yeah Can I have your daughter For the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know You say, "I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die Tough luck, my friend But the answer is no! " Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human, too? Why you gotta be so rude? I'm gonna marry her anyway Marry that girl Marry her anyway Marry that girl Yeah, no matter what you say Marry that girl And we'll be a family Why you gotta be so rude? I hate to do this, you leave no choice Can't live without her Love me or hate me we will be boys Standing at that altar Or we will run away To another galaxy, you know You know she's in love with me She will go anywhere I go WHILE LISTENING: Listen to the song and check the father´s response.

AFTER LISTENING: Role play the situation Arrangements: Groups of three S1: Boyfriend S2: Girlfriend´s mother S3: Girlfriend´s father Scenario The boyfriend is very much in love with his girlfriend and wants to marry her, but her parents oppose to the idea.

Task to be performed TEENS: Before performing the task, have the pictures provided photocopied and displayed on the walls, so students can have fun writing their ideas. This will be an interesting starter. Bearing in mind that they are supposed to use the first conditionals in the conversation, the boyfriend has to convince his girlfriend´s parents that their marriage will work out and explain why. (For example, IF WE GET MARRIED, I WILL... / IF YOU GIVE ME PERMISSION, I WILL.../ IF I MARRY YOUR DAUGHTER, WE WILL... / IF WE DON`T GET MARRIED, WE WILL.../ IF I DON´T MARRY HER, I WILL... / IF YOU DON´T GIVE ME YOUR PERMISSION, WE WILL.../ etc...) The students playing the parents also have to respond using the first conditional as well (For example, IF YOU GET MARRIED, YOU WILL... / IF YOU DO IT, YOU WILL...etc)

Task to be performed ADULTS: Before performing the task, elicit from the married male students how they proposed to their wives or the female students how their husbands proposed to them. / IF YOU DON´T GIVE ME YOUR PERMISSION, WE WILL.../ etc...). The students playing the parents also have to respond using the first conditional as well (For example, IF YOU GET MARRIED, YOU WILL... / IF YOU DO IT, YOU WILL...etc)
