January 13, 2014 Multivariate Expressions and Equations

DO NOW No Calculator!!! Evaluate these expressions if A = 2 and B = 6 1). A + B2). B – A 3). 4B4). 2B + 2A 5). 2B6). 2B + 3A 2A 2 AP

What are we doing Today OBJECTIVE: WE WILL be able to solve multivariate expressions and equations ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: Remember: we are simply isolating a variable using inverse operations, just like in one and two step equations AP

What is a multivariate expression? AP A multivariate expression is one that has more than one variable. They are usually expressed with one of the variables isolated – that is, with a coefficient of one. The answer is a ratio of one variable to the other EXAMPLES: Y = 2X D = 2R (from circles) R = ½ D

Multivariate Problems: - They usually ask you to isolate one of the variables. - Use inverse operations to isolate the variable in question. EX: 2A = 4B for A 2A = 4B for B AP

Watch Me Do These – Take Notes 1). X + 8 = Y for X 2). 4A – B = 0 for B 3). 11A = 2A + 3B for B and A AP

Let’s Do These Together 1). 6P +18C = 12 for P 2). -4A - 16 = 9B for A 3). B = 7A -2B for B

Do These Independently Solve all for A 1). 2A – 2B = 42). 5A = 10C 3). 3A + 9B = 124). -A = 4X 5). 2A + 4 = 12 + 3B
