It took them quite some time to think as I guided them along questions, these summarizes their interpretations. QUESTIONS ASKED: I would like to show you a few messages, so you can tell me what you think. For each message: a.What is it trying to say? b. Who is it talking to? c. Do you like it? Why or why not? RESULTS: “I like the slogan, it is talking to me as fisherman. It means that the fishes is our life, we are not fishermen without fishes. We earn by catching fish for my family, my children’s future. I will do the correct thing in fishing. I will protect the MPA.” Kinabuhi, kaugmaon, kadyawon! (Life, future, Let’s do it right!) (Life, Future, Let’s do it right!)

USING THE SAME SET OF QUESTIONS, BELOW IS THE RESULT OF THE FGD” I would like to show you a few messages, so you can tell me what you think. For each message: a.What is it trying to say? “We agree that the family can make many things happen even those not related to MPA.” b. Who is it talking to? “It is talking to me as fisherman, to other fishers, and to the family. “ c. Do you like it? Why or why not? “Yes, ma’am that is fine.” Ang pamilya magtinabangay, hamok makab-ot! Kadyawon ta! (If the family help one another, many things can be done! Let’s do things right.)

Questions asked: a. I will show you a picture with a message on it. b. What does it show? What are the different things you see in it? c. What does the message tell you? d. What elements do you like about it? Why/why not? e. What elements do you not like about it? Why/why not? f. What do you think of when you see it? This time, it took them longer to understand the drawn logo. After repeated questions, after paraphrasing, the fishermen said……..

“It shows the family in a boat – father with telescope, mother in the middle, son with the megaphone. The fish is above being watched by the family. It means the family has to guard the MPA, because precious fishes live there, our source of food and livelihood. I see the family, the wave of sea, the grouper fish playing happy, I like them all.”

The same questions were asked : All comments given were positive ones --- they like the drawing, they like the color, they like the family riding the boat looking up the grouper. But the community cannot give comments on what is the significance or what message does it bring you or what does the message tell you? But yes, they do like and agree to what the slogan and tagline say. Most of the time, they were just smiling and nodding heads.

QUESTIONS: a. I will show you an idea for a poster. This is not yet the final one, we just want to get your opinion on it. b. What do you see in this poster/billboard? What are the elements that you notice? c. What does it say? Can you read it? d. Who do you think it is talking to? e. What does it want to communicate to them? f. What do you like about it? Why? g. What do you not like about it? Why? h. After seeing it, will you change anything in the way you think or feel or do? Why/why not? i. Is there anything hard to believe about this message? j. Is there anything in this poster/billboard that you feel is not acceptable to you? What about to the community? k. Is it something you feel is new or is it something you have seen before?

Answers were the same with the logo, however, they said further answered… “It may be possible people will change the way they feel or think after seeing the billboard.” “We believe the message but in truth is it really hard to change people.” “It will be acceptable by the community because it is easy to understand it, many can own up to it.” “What’s new is the use of the vernacular language and the new billboard design.”

The community just agreed with everything in the billboard.
