2 Korea and CERN / May 2009 2 Entering a New Era in Fundamental Science The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the largest and truly global scientific projects ever, is the most exciting turning point in particle physics. Exploration of a new energy frontier proton-proton collisions at E CM = 7-14 TeV Exploration of a new energy frontier proton-proton collisions at E CM = 7-14 TeV LHC ring: 27 km circumference CMS ALICE LHCb ATLAS

3 Why everything is so complex? We are trying to solve some of the main puzzles of nature What is the origin of mass What is the dark matter that keeps together the clusters of galaxies Why the main interactions are so different in strenght Why gravity is not included so far in our picture How many are really the dimensions of our world The answer to some of these questions is probably hidden in the so far unexplored TeV region 3

7 Korea in CMS Korea involvement in CMS dates back to 1997. Important contribution to the Construction of the Detector Now important contribution to the Operation and Data Taking activities, GRID Computing (Tier2) and Physics Analysis. 7 The swiveling platform: 220 ton object rotated in 15 mn Hundreds of sophisticated Muon RPCs, constructed, installed, commissioned Produced in Dong Yang

10 10 Where we are now. About 15pb -1 delivered by LHC and ~13.8pb -1 of data collected by CMS. Overall data taking efficiency ~92%. ICHEP L ≈ 8.5x10 31 cm -2 s -1 L ≈ 10 27 cm -2 s -1 Average fraction of good channels per CMS sub-system >99%.

12 12 Upgrade project. Financial plan for the CMS upgrade will be presented at the next RRB. We expect commitments in the April RRB. I expect Korea will play an important role in the upgrade of CMS. First LHC Shutdown 2012-13 HF/HO phototubes replacement. YE4 shielding wall. Forward Muons Upscope: 4-th muon endcap station: CSC + RPC Second LHC Shutdown 2015-2016 New 4 layer Pixel Detector HB/HE new photo-transducers

13 Conclusion We have just started the systematic exploration of the TeV region with an excellent scientific instrument. My hope is that there will be many un-expected results and our current understanding of nature will change in depth thereafter. I am fully confident that korean physicists will continue to provide CMS outstanding contributions to the operation of the detector and to the physics analysis of the data. In this respect new groups and additional investments in local computing infrastructures (Tier2) would be welcome. I hope Korea will be able to contribute significantly to the Upgrade project of CMS. 13
