Do NOW  In your NEW Notebook: blank Number the first blank page #1, and the back of that page #2. Label Bottom or Top OUTSIDE EDGE Continue numbering to at least #30 (We will label up almost 30 pages today) This first page is your “About Me” Page. You may start working on it at this time!

About StaceyAnne Hartberger Lateral Entry Working on Masters in Science Curriculum Just finished my 6 th year teaching middle school science Mainly 6 th grade, but also 7 th & 8 th EC, ESL, Level I reading students as well as accelerated learners Immunology Degree Scientist for 10+ yrs first career Mom of 2! 4 Agenda Why structured notebooks in Science? Notebook Mini-lesson Break W1/W2 tasks – where do we go from here? Periodic Table Mini-lesson Exit Ticket

Why Structured Notebooks? Helps students learn organization Creates class “textbook” for EOG review Helps teacher be organized as well! Kids like structure (whether they admit it or not!) It created a framework for their learning

Notebook Set-Up Activity Same as when teaching students setup new notebook PPT will be available on my wiki! Modify to fit your teaching style! Let’s go!

Common Core Writing Tasks Students should be practicing this as often as possible! How can we integrate this into what we are already doing? How do we get our students to the level they need to be, especially if not quite there yet?

W2 Informational Task 2012-21013 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Grade 8: Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting (e.g., headings) graphics (e.g., charts, tables) and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. On a notecard: What does this mean to you? How are we already doing this in our Science Classrooms? Where do we go from here?

Give one – Get one Every one stand behind their chair! When I say Begin: Move around the room, creating pairs For each pairing: Give a thought! Get a thought! Keep sharing until the music stops

Common Core Task – TakeAways The more students practice writing, the better writers they will become! Writing builds vocabulary Verbal Communication Skills increase ability to access higher paying jobs. Everything doesn’t have to be a full essay!

Periodic Table Mini-Lesson Objective: (students) Why is the Periodic Table arranged this way? How does the Periodic Table help us understand facts about the element? Objective: (US!) How can students then use product to complete a W2 informational task?

Example Lesson Plan Do Now @ atoms Brief Notes about related Vocabulary Create Foldable Inquiry-based Activity with Completed Foldable as Product (my stations) Next Step: Creation of W1 or W2 product, using foldable info and related resources

Periodic Table Foldable You will create a foldable to describe, illustrate, and give example of each group on the periodic table. Remember: Each group (family) is characterized by its properties. Using our “Notebook Foldables” book, let’s decide on an appropriate foldable

Info to Include: For each group/family you need to include the following information: 1.Name of group 2.List of elements in the group 3.5 characteristics of all elements in the group (number of valence electrons, all metals, etc.) 4.Give information and/or uses for at least 3 elements in the group 5.Draw at least one illustration for each group. The groups are: Hydrogen Nitrogen Family Alkali Metals Oxygen Family Alkaline Earth Metals Halogens Boron Family Noble Gases Carbon Family

Periodic Table Resource Ideas Teacher created webquest Articles, informational texts Station Labs Online Interactive Periodic Table Elements Details Periodic Table Videos Who discovered the elements?

Exit Ticket On your index card, tell me: THREE things you think you will do in your classroom TWO things you would like more info about ONE thing that you loved/hated about today! If you would like more information from me, please include CMS email!
