6 Possible Reasoning's Mental illness ‘He just snapped’ Family problems Bullying Influenced by peers Media/ culture of violence Copycat effect Sociologist view 2000- 26% of parents feared for their child’s safety in school March 2001- 29% of students saw some risk for attack in their school After Columbine it was raised to 40% School is still the safest place for kids - Dying in school from a homicide is 1 in 2 million

7 Noteworthy Cases of predominately one race (80% and above) White: 43% Black: 3.5% Latino: 3.5% Cases in mixed communities: 50% Rural area- 45% Suburb- 29% Urban- 25%

8 Noteworthy All shooters were male except 1 Avg. age of shooter: 14.5yrs Range of shooters: 6yrs to Adult

9 Geographic Conclusion Typically in rural areas (45%) but still considered random East coast had a high case of incidences but no real concentration throughout the country Range in class was from lower to upper- middle More common in predominately white areas, but US also has a higher white population No correlation of severity of crimes in age or area
