2 How do you know if person is depressed? weight change everyday crying insecurity, worrying, over- analyzing what people say less time outside of the house neglecting friends (less happy hour, less hang out) less words throughout the day desire to travel or make a major change in life. being addicted to internet You can't sleep or you sleep too much. You can't concentrate or find that previously easy tasks are now difficult. You feel hopeless and helpless. You can't control your negative thoughts, no matter how much you try. You have lost your appetite or you can't stop eating. You are much more irritable and short-tempered than usual. You have thoughts that life is not worth living.

3 When someone has five or more of these symptoms most of the time for 2 weeks or longer, that person is probably depressed. Teens who are depressed may show other warning signs or symptoms, such as lack of interest or motivation, poor concentration, and low mental energy caused by depression increased problems at school because of skipped classes. people who cut themselves or who have eating disorders may have unrecognized depression that needs attention.

4 Why Do People Get Depressed? Genetics- Research shows that depression runs in families and that some people inherit genes that make it more likely for them to get depressed. Life Events- The death of a family member, friend, or pet can go beyond normal grief and sometimes lead to depression also, a parents divorce, separate, or remarry, can trigger depression. Family and Social Environment- negative, stressful, or unhappy family atmosphere can affect their self-esteem and lead to depression. high-stress living situations such as poverty; homelessness; and violence in the family, relationships, or community. Medical Conditions-Certain medical conditions can affect hormone balance and therefore have an effect on mood. Some conditions, such as hypothyroidism, are known to cause a depressed mood in some people.

5  major depression- more severe, short-lasting  Dysthymia- longer-lasting but less severe  adjustment disorder with depressed mood- refers to a depressive reaction to a specific life event (such as a death, divorce, or other loss), when adjusting to the loss takes longer than the normally expected timeframe or is more severe than expected and interferes with the person's daily activities.  Bipolar disorder -depressive condition that involves periods of major depression mixed with periods of mania.

6 How Is Depression Different From Regular Sadness? affects a person's thoughts, outlook, and behavior as well as mood. Also feel tired, irritable, and notice changes in appetite. person's thoughts reflect that hopelessness and helplessness despite their true value, people with depression can feel worthless and unlovable. Sadness is brief and will go away pull away from those around them or from activities they once enjoyed. This usually makes them feel more lonely and isolated, making the depression and negative thinking worse. If you have a worst case of depression you can think about committing your own death Physical changes- upset stomach, loss of appetite, weight gain or loss, headaches, and sleeping problems

7  Treatment for depression can include talk therapy, medication, or a combination of both.  doctors prescribe medicine for a person who has depression.  keep busy no matter how tired you feel.  Friends or others need to step in if someone seems severely depressed and isn't getting help.

8 When Depression Is Severe People who may be thinking about hurting themselves or about suicide need help asap contract a adult or call a suicide hotline so they can give you support trying to cheer up a friend or reasoning with him or her probably won't work to help depression or suicidal feelings go away.
