Chapter 3 Section 1

To use or not to use? Should we use Earth’s resources? How do we protect ecosystems? Antarctica – should we build and mine there?

Main Types of Environmental Issues 1.Resource use 2.Population Growth 3.Pollution

Resource Use Natural resource: –Anything in the environment that is used by people Renewable Resource: –Naturally replaced in a short amount of time –Sunlight, wind, and trees Nonrenewable Resource: –Resource that is not replaced as it is used –Coal and oil

Population Growth Figure 3 page 85 Population growth was slow until 1650 A.D. Improvements in Medicine, agriculture, and sanitation Death rate decreased

Pollution Pollution: –Any change to the environment that has a negative effect on living things –Generating electricity by burning coal can result in air pollution –Some pesticides used to kill insects that eat crops are harmful to other animals

Approaches Choices are made at the personal, local, national, and global levels –Personal level  Ride your bike –Local level  Landfill or incinerator –National  Oil drilling in a wildlife refuge –Global  How to protect our atmosphere

Approaches First Step: –Understand how humans interact with the environment Second Step: –Find information and decide what to do with it

Development Development viewpoint: –Humans should be able to freely use and benefit from all of Earth’s resources –Considers the environment in terms of economics

Preservation Preservation viewpoint: –All parts of the environment are equally important, no matter how useful they are to humans –Humans are caretakers of nature –Earth and its resources are a source of beauty, comfort, and recreation –Ecosystems should not be disturbed for the benefit of people

Conservation Conservation viewpoint: –People should use resources from the environment as long as they do not destroy these resources –Balance between development and conservation –Manage resources for today and our future

Homework http://www.startribune.com/ http://www.nytimes.com/ Wall Street Journal http://www.livescience.com/

Homework Find a current event that affects our environment Create a printer paper size poster on the topic Summarize the current event in your own words Describe different viewpoints Proposed solutions What your side of the issue is and a solution you may have Include pictures
