Health & Nutrition “It’s fun to be fit!”

Our Project Our team has decided to start a project that would affect kids all over surrey in a positive way. We had realized that not many kids under the ages of thirteen are receiving the amount of physical activity required per day. So our organization is all about health, and nutrition. Our goal is to keep kids within the surrey school district 36 physically active. Our plan is to create teams that would go to elementary schools every other day, so that we can show children at a young age that their health is very important to maintain. We will be doing this by setting up various activities, and games after school that would intrigue the children, but yet allow them to receive the physical activity needed in a day. The second portion of our goal is the nutrition aspect; our group believes that nutrition is very important to help keep us healthy. We will be teaching the children about nutrition in a way that will be keeping them interested in healthy food, making it look amazing, and magically making the food taste good. We have come up with various ways to bake and make delicious but healthy products that children would love to eat. Our goal is not to provide food for these children, but it is to teach children that healthy food can look, and taste good too, so that the children can start to eat healthy on a regular basis. Let’s get started!

Our Plan We decided to have our project focused very locally, and use the SD36 school area/zone. The reason we did this was if we did this change closer to our homes and closer to our life, the project will become closer to our hearts and we will really be able to see the difference and change. When you are in elementary school you have recess and lunch, and yes you exercise then but that not enough to keep you health. Also kids only have gym every second day which is like an hour long and sometimes shorter. So what we are trying to do is make exercising a bigger part of your daily schedules, yet at the same time not have it be boring like running laps. Yet have it be fun activates and games, and not every day that we come in be the same we can do different activities each day. One day could be focused on team build games and the next day could be highly competitive games. Games, Sports & Activities: Relay races Freeze tag Basic sports (Soccer, Volleyball, etc.) California Kick Ball Capture the flag Team tag Freeze dance Dancing Jump Rope Hula Hooping And many more...

Why Health & Nutrition? The reason that we picked this topic is because physical activity is a huge concern with many families and children. Children need at least an hour and a half of exercise per a day, every day. The generation with children today depends on technology way too much. We have come up with this program to target children in grades K-7 to get physical active. That is why we have come up with an idea that motivates children to come out every other day after school to participate in a physical education program. The idea is that this will motivate the kids enough that they will actually go outside on the days that the program is not running. In the program we will have many activities that will be fun and engaging. All children will participate and all will have tons of fun. For our program, it's not going to be only running and power workouts, We will have games and have healthy snacks as well to keep them on track of things and to keep them fit. Our goal is to target the children that are sitting on the couch most often and eating junk food from all hours of the day. As they grow up, their bones and bodies are going to be used to not working out and not eating healthy so then the body will not be as flexible or as healthy as it would be as if they did work out.

The Usage of Hours Our team has found a very effective way to use our man hours. Our plan is to go to one hundred elementary schools in Surrey and White Rock, School District 36, with groups of ten at each school. So at one school we will be using up fifteen man hours in one day, and fifteen hundred man hours in one day all across surrey. We believe that these man hours will be used very effectively because; our volunteers will be well educated in both fitness and nutrition, so that the children can be taught. Most of our volunteers will be working with the children to keep them physically active, which mean playing games, and sports, and a few of the volunteers will be working with another group of children and educating them on nutrition, and how they can eat cool fun foods, and be healthy at the same time. A few examples of the activities that we will be running are soccer, basketball, relay races, etc. On the nutrition side we will be having food like classes where we allow children to experiment with healthy food, so that they can find new ways to eat healthy daily. In conclusion our team has found many ways for our person hours to be used in a effective and helpful manor.

Our Food Ideas Food Ideas (Per Pound) : -Celery-$0.60 -Carrots-$1 -Apples-$2 -Bananas-$0.50 -Pineapples-$1.43 -Watermelons-$0.32 -Grapes-$1.28 -Yoghurt Pops -Oranges-$0.74 -Blueberries-$1.52 -Apricots-$1.48 -Nectarines-$1.03 -Cabbage-$0.85 -Strawberries-$1.47 -Snow Peas-$4.13 -Cherries-$3.23 -Cracker Sandwiches -Smoothies -Fiber Bars -Fruit Kabobs -Apple Sauce -Brown Rice

Our Budget For our project, we will require some sports equipment. We will purchase at least a class set of thirty for every school. This set includes badminton rackets, nets shuttle cocks, sports balls such as volleyballs, soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, footballs, hockey balls, hockey sticks padding nets, hula hoops, skipping rope and cones. We will also include a granola bar to keep everyone energized. The badminton equipment will cost about three hundred seventy dollars, the sports balls will cost around one thousand four hundred forty dollars, the hockey equipment will cost about two hundred forty dollars as well, the hula hoops, skipping rope and cones will cost around one hundred eighty dollars and the snacks will cost about ten dollars. This will be a grand total of about two thousand six hundred fifty four dollars, plus about sixty dollars every day for transportation. Costs (set of 30): Badminton nets (single net) = $40 Badminton rackets = $270 Badminton birdies = $60 Hockey sticks = $30 Goal posts (a pair) = $40 Goalie padding (a pair) = $200 Hula hoops = $90 Skipping ropes = $60 Cones = $30 Quaker oats bars = $10 Transportation(minivan) = $60 per day Sports balls (volleyballs, soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, footballs, hockey balls) = $240 each or $1,440 all together Total: = $2370 (Plus tax= 2654.4) And an extra $60 after that every day for transportation.

Will it be a Success? We will know that our project has been a success when the children demand for more. When the children we teach about Health & Nutrition crave for more that’s when we will know we have made an impact. When participating in sports, children exercise, and catch on to new, long term habits that keep them physically and mentally healthy. Teaching a student about healthy dieting will make them create habits to eat the proper food, after a long period of time their minds will develop so that they make healthy choices when picking out their food. Seeing the children improve their daily physical activity and eating habits will definitely show that we are making a change and are impacting them. When the kids encourage and help their friends and families to improve their physical activity and health will definitely reflect success, knowing that we have impacted others around the children must mean we are doing our job right.

Timeline Our project will encourage children to exercise regularly and eat healthy, even once the program is finished. The children will have a good time in the program, making new friends and socializing with old ones, playing sports and running around, and learning about healthy (and possibly new) foods. Many of them will join sports teams after the program to continue to make new friends, socialize, and stay fit, and they will all continue to exercise regularly and eat healthy. We plan to be a part of creating a healthier generation, that is well-informed about health and nutrition.
