4 Math Coordinate Plane

5 What Are You Learning? I CAN identify elements of a coordinate plane. I CAN graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. I CAN identify ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. I CAN identify quadrants by ordered pairs.

6 Why Do You Need To Know This? Using coordinate planes are useful because they enable you to find locations using grids. This can be used in maps and in finding directions.

7 Vocabulary Coordinate plane—A plane in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at their zero points. It can also be called a coordinate grid. X-axis—The horizontal number line Y-axis—The vertical number line

8 Vocabulary Origin—The point at which the two lines intersect (0, 0) Ordered pair—Pair of numbers used to locate a point in the coordinate plane X-coordinate—The first number in the ordered pair. It corresponds to a # on the x-axis. Y-coordinate—The second number in the ordered pair. It corresponds to a # on the y-axis.

9 Notes The origin is the center of the coordinate plane. The x-axis is the horizontal number line. The y-axis is the vertical number line. Right and up is positive. Left and down is negative.

10 Notes II (-, +) I (+, +) III (-, -) IV (+, -) The coordinate plane is separated into four sections called quadrants.
