1 Exploitation Ideas Alan Gobbi YEC

2 Exploitation includes Wide publication on a free-to-use basis IPR Protection/patenting Licensing to other organisations Consultancy Start-up businesses University spin-offs or graduate enterprise Knowledge or tools for public or social good organisations Input to Standards Input to EU policy making (studies, workshop results) Educational initiatives Knowledge or tools enabling further collaborative research

3 Staged development of ideas Concept definition Exploitation path definition Specification Development Evaluation Refinement / Conclusions We need to identify owners of “projects” to progress ideas through the stages.

4 Exploitable Ideas Ideas have been categorised as Antenna technology HAP system technology Optical technology Spin - off

5 Antenna Design of a steerable antenna using Lundberg lens Beam steering for Smart arrays Tilted antenna arrays for use on HAP

6 HAP system Combined RRM with Smart Antennas Incremental HAP deployment methodology Channel allocation method for HAP smart antenna Propagation channel model combined with digital relief model Propagation channel model GPS from HAPs HAPs as relay for earth observation satellites

7 Optical PAT - pointing, acquisition and tracking PAT exploitation – optical beam steering unit for IPL applications. Configurable PAT controller H/W (inc. S/W), Optical inter skyscraper links (to cope with movement of skyscrapers in storms)

8 Spin - off Robust WIMAX receivers for mobile applications Sell the channel simulator with user friendly interface Lower-altitude platform with a video-link for road traffic monitoring IR camera for THERMAL IMAGING for study of energy efficiency in cities. Exploit trial 2 data CAPANINA web site tools to support other EU projects Integration of mm wave front end into other equipment Camera tracking system for aircrafts

9 Steerable antenna using Lundberg lens Originator John Thornton, UoY Activity (What) Design of a steerable antenna using Lundberg lens By using a Lundberg based lens antenna design, there is scope to produce a low profile steerable antenna system with multiple feeds such that two signal sources can be tracked simultaneously Significance (Why) Clearly for HAPs and moving trains there is a need for a mm wave antenna that can track the movement. There is also scope to use the technology to allow stationary users to receive signals from two signal sources thus improving diversity and availability for a wider range of applications Participants (Who) Antenna manufactures, Train operators, System integrators, Satellite industry Exploitation path (How) Develop the concepts further at UoY ( with support from CSEM) Establish if an existing antenna manufacture will be interested in exploiting the technology. Identify control requirements. Supporting notes John Thornton (UoY) is pursuing a Patent application. Potential scope to seek development funding from ESA (European Space Agency) Time frame First off prototype system for demo by late 2006

10 Summary Several ideas have been identified Promising ones to be selected and prioritised Owners required to manage “projects” Quantify scope within CAPANINA Identify viable follow on activities Complete draft eTIP
