The use of any benchmarks must be utilized with caution, as there may be significant differences between the lines of business being analyzed and the benchmark with regard to: –Definition of claim counts- Claim coding –Claims practices- Policyholder deductibles –Policy coverages- Limits –Underwriting- Legal precedents –Geographic mix Such differences could make the development patterns non- comparable.

Other things being the same, pertinent past experience data are data of the case itself, rather than of similar cases, of the recent past, rather than of the distant past, which are homogeneous, rather than heterogeneous, and which are statistically credible. Usually, however, those criteria conflict with each other. … The actuary would be prudent in adjusting the available data to take account of the circumstances of the case.
