SPS re-commissioning with beam K. Cornelis PS-SPS days

The 3 ingredients for a successful startup 1. A good cold check out 2. A good cold check out 3. A good cold check out Everything that can be checked must be checked HOWEVER

Certain things can only be checked with beam.  Aperture and obstacles in vacuum chamber.  The well functioning of beam instruments.  Alignment.  Feedbacks.  Conditioning with beam.  Optics checks and matching

Boundary conditions  New control room  New software  New hardware  New interlocks  Modified access system  A long shut-down.

The new control room  Available as from beginning of February.  Will be used for North area cold run  Will be used for cold check out so that operators will become acquainted with it.

New Software  Equipment level : SL-EQUIP to FESA MASTER TIMING MASTER TIMING  Application soft : C-tree to ORACLE Wilkie to LSA TZ to LSA Worries : -Will software be ready? (under development) -The bugs -We have to know How to use it

Interlocks Interlocks  New Hardware Interlock crates in BA1, BA4, BA6.  Software interlock system : equipment calls.

Access Access  Locks on equipment doors.  Emergency stop connected to some zone limiting doors.

Commissioning with beam (TT10)  Re-alignment in TT2  Low beta for stripping (Check matching) Tools : BPM’s, profile monitors, screens

Injection  Tools : Kicker timing, OASIS, BCT TT10, MOPOS first turn.

RF capture and acceleration  New timing modules in RF-cage  Re-commissioning and tuning the loops is a lengthy job done by specialists.  Several iterations needed, interleaved with transverse work. Tools : Soft to control timing modules, longitudinal PU‘s, OASIS, first turn and orbit measurements.

Closed orbit  Half of the orbit PU‘s were modified during shutdown (polarity checks) Tools : CO software and analysing algorithms

Alignment  Important for SE (orbit in sextupoles and limited bumper strength)  We need accelerated beam Tools : Closed orbit Assistance from magnet people and geometers.

Aperture  For the CNGS beam we need full aperture. Tools : Closed orbit, beam loss monitors Assistance from vacuum group in case obstructions are found.

Transverse feedback  No major changes but power amplifier was taken out during shutdown for protection. Tools : Q-meter, OASIS.

Slow extraction  TZ software replaced by LSA  Spill feedback moved from PCR to BA1  The resonant extraction magnifies all the errors in the machine so it must be done once the machine is ‘cleaned-up‘  Takes a few hours if all the tools are available and working well.  If NOT, it can take a shift or more Tools : closed orbit monitors, RF timing module control, profile monitors, control of the extraction elements.

TT20  Certain alignments were done during shutdown.  Tools : screens, position monitors, SSIS, profile monitors, orthogonal steering on splitters and targets.

Conditioning  New graphite beam dump in LSS1  RF cavities Tools : Vacuum monitoring available in CCC

North area  New controls at equipment and application level. (CESAR)  A cold run took place in November 2005 testing two secondary beam lines.  A new cold run will take place in March 2006 involving all the lines.  For commissioning with beam the EA team wants 3 days without physicists.

Conclusions  The different steps in the beam commissioning will take more setting up and checks due to the numerous changes.  Increased risk for ‘bad surprises‘.  New tools may have bugs, less functionality or be only partly ready.  We will need all the help we can get.
