The Water Cycle
2
Link Where do puddles go?
3
Essential Question How does water move around Earth’s atmosphere and lithosphere (ground)? ?
4
Water Vapor (Gas) Water vapor moves into the atmosphere two ways: Evaporation: Water is heated (usually by the sun), changed to a gas & rises into Earth’s atmosphere. Transpiration: Plants give off water vapor through their leaves
5
You can see where the water used to be. Where did it go?
6
Liquid Water - Condensation Water vapor cools & turns back into liquid. Those water droplets join together to make clouds. Two types: Depends on temperature – Dew: Water vapor condenses right on a surface – Frost: Water vapor goes straight from a gas to ice crystals, a solid.
7
Why is the can wet, but the mug frosty?
8
Liquid Water - Precipitation Water droplets in the clouds fall Form of precip. depends on temperature (clouds, air, & ground) – Rain, snow, freezing rain, sleet, or hail
9
Why will it snow in Greenville, but not here in Greenwood?
10
Liquid Water – Run Off Water wants to be at sea level Two Types: – Surface Water Flow – Ground Water Flow
11
What kind of run-off will we get? Is the ground porous? Yes – Ground Water Flow No – Surface Water Flow Is the precip. falling fast? Yes – Surface Water Flow No – Ground Water Flow
