3 Objectives Learn to create a spreadsheet to chart the different colors in a package of Skittles. Collect data and create a bar graph.

4 What is a bar graph? Review What is a bar graph? Why is it important that you know how to make a graph?

5 What is a bar graph? Review A bar graph uses bars to show data It is a great way to organize data and see how various items can be grouped together. Bar graphs are used in a variety of situations and places, especially in businesses.

6 Procedure Today we will create a bar graph using the colors in a individual size pack of Skittles

7 Procedure You will receive a sheet of paper labeled with the colors in a bag of Skittles Then mark tally marks by each color as you remove Skittles from the bag one by one Then write the number of tally marks by each month

8 Procedure The following steps should be used to create a bar graph: Create a title for your graph Using your rule draw a horizontal and vertical line Label the horizontal axis with the colors and the vertical axis with numbers (counting by ones).

9 Procedure Using your ruler draw bars by each color showing the number of colors in each bag Use your crayons to color the bars

10 Procedure Write three things that you observe on your graph Compare your graph with the student sitting next to you Write three things that you observe on your classmates graph

11 Computer Lab - Procedure We will be using Microsoft Excel to create a bar graph based on the information gathered within the classroom on our Skittle graphs.

12 Computer Lab - Procedure Using the computer and projector I am going to model how to create a spreadsheet to create a bar graph.

13 Computer Lab - Procedure Students will complete the following steps: You will use the tally sheet of the number of Skittles in each bag to complete the spreadsheet and make a graph Open the bar graph template on the computer Label column A1 MONTH. Type the colors in column A.

14 Computer Lab - Procedure Label column B1 NUMBER. Record number of each month in proper cells. Select the labels and data Make a bar graph and label it appropriately. Press F11 to generate the graph Make a title for your bar graph. Print your graph

15 Assessment Rubric Use the following rubric to score your graph. Student included a title. 1 2 3 4 5 Student completed a tally mark sheet. 1 2 3 4 5 Student completed a spreadsheet. 1 2 3 4 5 Student completed the bar graph. 1 2 3 4 5 Student labeled bar graph correctly. 1 2 3 4 5
