How to Grow a Lima Bean By Jennifer Brooks

What is in soil? Pieces of rocks that have been broken down Water Minerals and nutrients Air Sticks, leaves, and other living materials

Types of Soil Clay Clay can be red, gray, or other colors. It feels cool and smooth in your hands. It holds a lot of water, hardly any of it drains out. Sand Sand is usually light brown and feels grainy in your hand, like salt. It does not hold water very well, most of it drains out. Loam Loam is dark brown or black. It feels mushy in your hands, sometimes a little grainy and sometimes smooth. It holds water well, but it lets some water drain out.

What do plants need to survive? Sunlight Water Soil Air Nutrients

Hypothesis We think the bean plant will grow best in red clay because it holds the most water.

Our Plant Growth Log 2 ½ inches 2 ¼ inches 2 inches 1 ¾ inch 1 ½ inch 1 ¼ inch 1 inch ¾ inch ½ inch ¼ inch Date

Results We found out that lima beans grow best in sand. The plant we grew in sand had lots of leaves and it grew the tallest.

Can anything stand alone? NO! We found out that nothing can truly stand alone because everything has its own needs. Plants need soil, air, water, and sunshine to live. Soil has to have rocks, air, and other stuff to be useful to plants. We need plants for oxygen, food, and shade. We need soil to grow plants to keep the ground from being muddy so we can play outside.
