4 O LYMPIC P ARKS !!! The Copper Box will host some of the most exciting actions on the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Games. During the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic events, they will take place at venues in the Olympic Park. Some of the Olympic venues are: Hampden Park in Glasgow (football), Earls Court in London (Volleyball), Wembley Arena in London (Badminton and Gymnastics), St. James’ Park in Newcastle (football). 9 B ASKETBALL A RENA Men’s Basketball first appeared on the Olympic programme at the Berlin 1936 Games, with the women’s event introduced at Montreal 1976. At the Berlin 1936 Games the first official Olympic Basketball tournament was held outdoors on courts made of sand that turned to mud when it rained. Twelve teams compete in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with 12 athletes (five players and seven substitutes) on each team.

10 S WIMMING The swimming pool is 50m long, 25m wide and 3m deep. It is divided into 10 lanes, although only the centre eight are used for competition. Johnny Weissmuller, the first man to swim 100m in under a minute, was just as famous out of the pool. Underwater Swimming featured at the Paris 1900 Games. Competitors earned points for the length of time and distance they were underwater.

11 B ADMINTON A public art display featuring the world’s largest shuttlecocks, which are 18 feet tall, can be found at the Kansas City Museum, USA. China has won a total of 30 Olympic Badminton medals since 1992. Denmark is the most successful European country.
