Why I Want the Nspire TM CX Navigator TM in All My Mathematics Classrooms Tracy Slate, Regional T3 Trainer Dean of Instruction ASTEC Charter Schools Oklahoma City, OK Slate.tracy@me,com Msslate.weebly.com

Reason #1: Experience CCMS: Classroom Connectivity in Promoting Mathematics and Science Achievement (2005) Four year research project using TI-Navigator in the Algebra 1 classroom 118 teachers in 28 US states and 2 Canadian provinces Supported by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education, through Grant R305K0050045 to The Ohio State University 14% Mean Learning Gain on Algebra 1 Test When Compared to Control Group

TI-Nspire TM CX Navigator TM : The Community-Centered Classroom class discussion peer interaction reasons for actions taken knowledge of class position same side as teacher lack of embarrassment pride in class achievement knowing others have the same difficulty cheering and enthusiasm non-confrontational competition Owens, Demana, Abrahamson, Meagher, & Herman (2004)

Percentage of Gore High School Students Passing Algebra I EOI from SY2005-SY2010 Control Group for SY2006 Using Only TI Calculators TI Navigator Technology was first introduced into the classroom in SY2007.

Changing Math Attitude From zero level college mathematics classes for all Gore graduates to 15% of seniors concurrently enrolled in College Algebra Added honors mathematics classes Students taking two math classes in one year Improved ACT mathematics scores

Oklahoma’s Academic Performance Index Scores include State Test Results (43% Math), Dropout and Graduation Rates, Attendance, ACT Scores, AP Classes, College Readiness Gore High School went from being on the State Needs-Improvement List in 2005 to Ranking in the Top 4% of High Schools in the State Based on API Scores

Reason #2: Things Have Changed KIDS TODAY… Learn anywhere, anytime, with and from anyone Always on, always connected, expecting collaboration Need to be engaged and involved Demand personalized learning experiences Linda Jordan, ICLE

TI-Nspire TM CX Navigator TM : Standards for Mathematical Practice: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Instantly Share & Assess – TI-Nspire ™ CX Navigator ™ System Increase student engagement and promote interactivity among students Instantly assess each student’s understanding and adapt lessons as they are being taught Maximize efficiency of classroom learning time Transfer files to the entire class at once – wirelessly, then save and collect them Create a Community-Centered Classroom Wirelessly share documents and instantly assess understanding

Reason #3: Rigor, Relevance, Relationships Meaningful learning occurs when students connect new information to previous experiences or things they already know.

TI-Nspire TM CX Navigator TM : How can Nspire TM Navigator TM help? Quick Polls- Change Classroom Climate Data Gathering Can Be Class Specific Fast Communication of Information RIGOR AND RELEVANCE
