1 Parent Survey Results: Overcrowding at West Sylvan 2014-15 West Sylvan PTA

2 Do parents want all 6 th graders at East if the facilities supported that? 51.9% agreed or strongly agreed they would like to have the 6 th graders ALL at East if the facilities supported that. 24.2% disagreed or strongly disagreed they would like all 6 th graders at East if facilities supported them. 23.9% were neutral on the option. It is ok to have 6 th graders split between East and West (current situation). 19.5% strongly agreed or disagreed that it was ok to have 6 th graders split between 2 campuses. 65.9% disagreed or strongly disagreed that it was ok to have 6 th graders split between 2 campuses. 14.6% were neutral If all kids are at West, 6th Graders NEED TO BE completely separate from the other grades (e.g. in a separate part of the building, different bell schedule). 39% strongly agreed or agreed that all 6 th – 8 th graders at West, the 6 th graders should be separate from 7 th /8 th graders. 32.3% disagreed or strongly disagreed that all 6 th – 8 th graders at West, the 6 th graders should be separate from 7 th /8 th graders. 28.7% were neutral If all kids are at West, 6 th graders DO NOT NEED to be separated from 7 th and 8 th graders. 39.8% strongly agreed or agreed that if all 6 th – 8 th graders were at West, 6 th grade did NOT need to be separate. 38.9% strongly disagreed or disagreed that if all 6 th – 8 th graders were at West, 6 th grade did NOT need to be separate. 21.3 were neutral 72.1% ranked Option 1 as their first or second choice 53.6% ranked Option 2 as their first or second choice 14.6% ranked Option 3 as their first or second choice 37.2% ranked Option 4 as their first or second choice 15.4% ranked Option 5 as their first or second choice 5.1% ranked Option 6 as their first or second choice 46.4% said doing nothing is NOT an option

3 Option 1: John Ferraro’s option to utilize the underused space at West to allow all kids to be at West. 72.1% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 47.2% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 24.9% selection option 1 as their second choice 10.9% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 5.9% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 4.7% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice <1% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 5.9% not acceptable

4 Option 2: Sell east, seek approval from PPS to use the funds to build additional classroom and cafeteria space at West. This was a 2 year solution, not a short term fix. 53.7% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 19.6% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 34.1% selection option 1 as their second choice 16.8% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 12% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 5.6% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice 3.1% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 8.9% not acceptable

5 Option 3: Minimal fixes to East for the 15-16 school year, relying on district wide boundary changes to resolve long term overcrowding. 14.6% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 5.9% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 8.7% selection option 1 as their second choice 18.7% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 21.5% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 14% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice 2% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 29.3% not acceptable

6 Option 4: Fix East campus for long term use as a 6 th grade campus (this was a 2 year solution, not a short term fix). 37.1% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 22.6% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 14.5% selection option 1 as their second choice 20.9% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 19.8% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 8.4% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice 2% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 11.7% not acceptable

7 Option 5: All kids at West with Creative Schedule. 15.4% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 2.8% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 12.6% selection option 1 as their second choice 21.2% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 14.2% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 17.6% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice 7% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 24.6% not acceptable

8 Option 6: Do nothing, wait for district wide boundary changes to address overcrowding. 5.1% of respondents selected this as their 1 st or 2 nd choice 1.7% Selected Option 1 as their first choice 3.4% selection option 1 as their second choice 5.9% Selected Option 1 as their third choice 8.1% Selected Option 1 as their 4 th choice 9.8% Selected Option 1 as their 5 th choice 24.9% selected option 1 as their 6 th choice 46.4% not acceptable
