DUAL ENROLLMENT What is it? How does it work & who is eligible? Where? When? How much?

What is Dual Enrollment?  Dual enrollment/concurrent enrollment is the opportunity for high school students to take college courses.  We use the term “dual enrollment” to mean that certain criteria has been met in order to qualify as dual enrollment, or coursework where the school district contributes toward the cost.  1-2 class periods release time are allowed and can count toward high school credit, if needed (not recommended)

How does it work? Who is eligible?  High school juniors and seniors who: a. Meet the required scores on one of the following standardized tests: PSAT, PLAN or MME b. Are enrolled in at least one high school class c. Have applied & are admitted to a post- secondary institution

Concurrent enrollment  Concurrent enrollment is coursework that does not meet the criteria for dual enrollment, meaning: a. The school district does not contribute anything toward the cost of the course b. Only one class period release time is allowed for a concurrent course. c. It cannot be counted as high school credit.

Where?  Central Michigan University  Mid Michigan Community College

When?  Scheduling courses at CMU or at MMCC depends greatly on your high school schedule.  Challenges exist with attempting to fit semester courses into a high school trimester format  Considerations: daily schedule, travel time, parking, school breaks, extra-curricular, etc.  Enough credits for graduation

How much?  Dual enrollment costs are figured by the sum of the state portion of the districts’ foundation allowance, per pupil, adjusted for the proportion of the school year that the student attends the postsecondary institution.  Student’s state portion of the Foundation Allowance per year, per semester x multiplier.  Course enrollment for one semester – one course at the college and four courses at the high school – proportion of time student is at college 20%

Process  Apply for admission – CMU application online; send transcript through Parchment.com MMCC meet with MPHS counselor.  Meet with counselor once high school schedules are run to select courses at CMU/MMCC  Requests are emailed or FAXed to CMU/MMCC by the counselor
