4 Origins 1346 – rumors spread through Europe of a sickness that is wiping out whole cities in Asia. 1347 – A ship coming from Caffa, a trading post in the Black Sea, docks in Messina, Sicily. Many crew member are sick and had large black swellings in armpit and groin. Rats escape the ship carrying fleas infected with deadly bacteria. Fleas transmit the disease to humans

9 FLAGELLANTS a belief that the plague was a punishment from God. Beat themselves to repent for sins. Became popular amongst people.

10 Violence against Jews Many blamed the plague on Jews. Claimed that they poisoned the water Supply. Acts of violence were committed as retribution

11 IMPACT Short term benefits to workers due to shortage in labor supply. Loss of prestige for the Church due to their inability to help during plague.
