Big Idea: Man and his Environment Man can interact with his environment. Man can manipulate his environment. Man is affected by the environment around us. Environment affects and determines how Man works.

Essential/Guiding Questions (use these questions to guide you in your learning of this topic) How does Man interact with his environment? Why Man manipulates his environment? How is Man affected by his environment? How does the interrelationship between Man and his environment benefit mankind?

What Is a Force? A force is a push or a pull. A push is a force that is applied on an object that causes it to move in a direction away from our body. (eg we push a trolley, push a door open) A pull is a force that is applied towards our body. (eg pull a piece of tissue paper from a box, drag the school bag on the floor)

What Is a Force? A combination of a push or a pull produces actions such as twisting and turning. Can you name some examples of such forces at work in our everyday lives?

Effects of a Force We cannot see a force but we can certainly see the effects of a force when it interacts with an object. We know if a force is strong or weak by observing what happens to the object during the interaction. Look at the example of forces in nature. We can know how strong/harmful the forces are by looking at the destruction caused.

Destruction caused by hurricanes Devastation at the Indonesian earthquake Source: images.search.yahoo.com

Some forces are useful such as the wind which is a force that can propel sailing boats and windmills (for mills and generation of electricity).

Effects of a Force What else can forces do? Forces can cause things to: -Start moving -Move faster ---------- (Can you list the rest?) Not forgetting, useful forces help us to do work. How?

We’ll have to look at Man & His Environment (BIG IDEA) again!

Man and His Environment Man interacts with his environment by making use of machines to make work easier for us. These machines can be big or small, simple or complex. How do machines make it easier for us to do work? Let’s explore!!!

Let’s go to the website http://www.edheads.org http://www.edheads.org Click on Simple Machines Click on Simple Machines Glossary to learn about the different types of simple machines

When you are done with that, go to the Simple Machines Home, under Simple Machines Activities, click Start. Test yourself by identifying the different types of simple machines in the various places in The Home and answer the questions within. Do likewise for The Tool Shed. Have Fun!!!

Welcome Back! Remember the essential or guiding questions at the beginning of the presentation? Can you try to answer some of the questions? Ask yourself if you can link the concepts you’ve learnt to the questions such as: - How is Man affected by his environment? - How does the interrelationship between Man and his environment benefit mankind?
