2 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS The process of compiling statistics and indicators in the CARICOM Programme is to obtain sex- disaggregated information for policy formulation, decision-making and monitoring and assessing of social development.

3 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS Relative to the collection of sex-disaggregated data (wherever possible), the idea is to facilitate the mainstreaming of gender in policy development

4 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS International Context: At the international level, the commitments emanating from a series of international conferences stimulated the production of statistics and indicators similar to these which are to be compiled.

5 CARICOM In the analysis of the situation of women for the Fourth World Conference in 1995, National Governments agreed to the following twelve (12) areas of concern: SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS

6 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS 1. WOMEN AND POVERTY 2.EDUCATION AND TRAINING 3.WOMEN AND HEALTH 4.VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN 5.WOMEN AND ARMED CONFLICT 6. WOMEN AND THE ECONOMY

7 CARICOM 7.WOMEN IN POWER AND DECISION- MAKING 8.ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN (INSTITUTIONAL MECHANISM) 9. HUMAN RIGHTS OF WOMEN 10. WOMEN AND THE MEDIA 11. WOMEN AND THE ENVIRONMENT 12. THE GIRL CHILD SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS

8 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS At the review undertaken by The CARICOM Secretariat and UNIFEM, the following themes were identified as requiring particular intervention:

10 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS THEMES USED IN THE UNSD/CARICOM SOCIAL GENDER AND ENVIRONMENT PROJECT (2000-02) were: 1.WORK 2.EDUCATION 3.HEALTH 4.INCOME AND WORKING CONDITIONS With initial work in the area of Power and Decision-making

11 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS THE 2003 WORK PROGRAMME OF STATISTICS SUB- PROGRAMME, CARICOM SECRETARIAT Includes the establishment of a core data set in all areas of statistics These current efforts in collecting social gender statistics will form part of the core data set in social gender statistics

12 CARICOM CURRENT CARICOM PROGRAMME: THE LIST OF INDICATORS IN THE SOCIAL GENDER COMPONENT OF THE CARICOM PROGRAMME: Was first proposed at the Second Meeting of the CARICOM Advisory Group in Social Gender and Environment Statistics in Dominica (2001) and was refined at the Third Meeting in Grenada (2002) SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS

13 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS Consideration was also given to the Milliennium Develpoment Goals (MDGs) for incorporation into the data set and some of these indicators are included where feasible.

16 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS RATIONALE FOR INCLUSION OF INDICATORS AND STATISTICS WAS BASED ON: Relevance at the Regional and National levels Frequency requested by users (policy-making, managers, planners and researchers)

17 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS The list of statistics has been divided into two groups. The first set (Group 1) - those which it is considered must be collected. Group 2 - while these are important they are thought to be more supporting information of the Group 1 indicators (based on time and effort they constitute Group 2)

18 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS As the Programme develops it would be possible to incorporate them fully as part of Group 1 (Key Indicators)

19 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS The SIMDG Committee: Has a critical role to play in the compilation of these statistics and indicators and To engage in follow-up activities relating to the preparation of a National Level Report (with analysis) as a major output.

20 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS The approach of establishing the SIMDG Committee and giving the Committee the responsibilty for compiling these statistics and indicators, will result in improvements in: Availability Accessibility Quality Improvement Timeliness Training opportunities

21 CARICOM SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS DISCUSSION POINTS: Adequacy/ availability of the statistics and indicators Additional indicators to be included Changes to be made between groups 1 and 2 Other issues relative to country perculiarities
