1 Ruth and Naomi Primary 6, Lesson 26

2 What did you walk on as you came into class? Following and Leading We all leave footprints as we travel through life. Sometimes we follow in someone else’s footsteps and try to do as they do. But others are watching us, and they may try to follow in our footsteps. Everything we do leaves a mark on someone, just as our step leaves a footprint in soft ground. When we do something good, we set a good example for others; when we do something wrong, we set a bad example.

3 Today we are going to learn about two women who knew the importance of both following and being good examples. Following and Leading This is the story of Ruth and Naomi, as found in the book of Ruth in the Old Testament.

4

5 For answers see Ruth 1:1, 3−5, 7 Ruth and Naomi Why did Naomi, her husband, and their two sons leave Bethlehem and go to Moab to live? What happened while they were there? Let’s work as a team to fill our basket full of wheat. Everyone who answers a question correctly gets to put a stalk of wheat into the basket. When the famine was over and Naomi started to go back to Bethlehem, who went with her?

6 Let’s read Ruth 1:14−17 Ruth and Naomi How did the two young women respond to Naomi’s request? Why do you think Ruth chose to stay with Naomi? Naomi was an Israelite and understood the gospel. Ruth was from Moab, where they worshipped idols. Ruth loved her mother-in-law. She wanted to be with Naomi and follow her good example in worshipping Heavenly Father.

7 Activity Time! Whose good example do you try to follow? How do they set a good example for you? Let's list the traits, like kindness, of these people who set a good example. Let's write these traits on the footprints you walked on in coming to class. Enrichment Activity 1

8 Let’s read Ruth 2:2 Ruth and Naomi What did Ruth volunteer to do so that she and Naomi would have food to eat? Glean means to go into the fields after the grain has been harvested and pick up what is left.

9 For answers, see Ruth 2:1, 3, 11-12, 15-16 Ruth and Naomi Who was Boaz? How did Boaz help Ruth when he first met her? In whose field did Ruth glean? How did Boaz help Ruth when he first met her? Why did he do this for her?

10 Let's read Ruth 3:11-13 Ruth and Naomi Why did Boaz feel even more of a responsibility to help Ruth? Whom do you have a responsibility to help? How can you help your parents, brothers, and sisters? How can you help grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins?

11 Activity Time! What kind of example did Ruth set for others? How can you be a good example to others? Enrichment Activity 4 For ideas, see Ruth 1:8, 16; 2:2 On a piece of paper trace your footprint. Then name traits you would like to develop so you can be a good examples for others. Write one of these on your footprint and work on it this week.

12 See Ruth 4:13 Ruth and Naomi Whom did Ruth marry? Because Ruth’s husband had died, the closest male relation in the family was expected to marry her so she could have children. Boaz was not Ruth’s nearest male relation. Her nearest kinsman did not want to marry Ruth, but Boaz did because she was a kind, caring woman.

13 See Ruth 4:17 Ruth and Naomi What was the name of their first son? Ruth’s great-grandson was David, the boy who fought Goliath and who later became king of Israel. David was an ancestor of Jesus Christ Who was Obed's grandson? Ruth and Boaz Obed & his wife Jesse & his wife David & his wife Jesus Christ    

14 I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus Enrichment Activity 5 I’m trying to be like Jesus; I’m following in his ways. I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say. At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice, But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers, I’m trying to love my neighbor; I’m learning to serve my friends. I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again. I try to remember the lessons he taught. Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying: Chorus “Love one another as Jesus loves you. Try to show kindness in all that you do. Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought, For these are the things Jesus taught.”
