1 PRogramme for Integrated earth System Modelling (PRISM) An Infrastructure Project for Climate Research in Europe

2 PRogramme for Integrated earth System Modelling (PRISM) Jean-Claude ANDRE and Sophie VALCKE CERFACS, F – 31 057 TOULOUSE Cedex 1 (France) With the help of Guy BRASSEUR (MPG-IMET, Hamburg) and Gerbrand KOMEN (KNMI, The Netherlands) and all the PRISM partners

3 PRISM Contributing Partners - MPG-IMET, Germany ( Dr. Guy Brasseur, coordinator ) - KNMI, The Netherlands - MPI-MAD, Germany - Met-Office, United Kingdom - UREADMY, United Kingdom - IPSL, France - Météo-France, France - CERFACS, France - DMI, Denmark - SHMI, Sweden - NERSC, Norway - ETH Zurich, Switzerland - ING, Italy - MPI-BGC, Germany - PIK, Germany - ECMWF, Europe - UCL-ASTR, Belgium - NEC Deutschland - FECIT/Fujitsu - SGI Deutschland - SUN, Germany

4 Context - Multi-Tera-scale Supercomputer resources will be made available within a few years: - US «Accelerated Climate PRediction Initiative» (ACPRI) - Japanese «Earth Simulator Project» and «Frontier Research System» => Europe not able to match on an individual national level, need to pool its efforts (organisational restructuring, significantly increased investments in supercomputer hardware) - Expertise in Europe is widely distributed: healthy, but requires mechanisms for effectively combining this expertise in a coordinated scientific framework - European basic dichotomy: - EU Framework Programmes promotes cooperative research in general - access to supercomputers restricted through national control => Disadvantage for European scientists: - development and application of sophisticated climate models localised in the few national climate research centres with dedicated supercomputer facilities -major potential resources of climate modelling expertise remain untapped

5 Overall PRISM Objectives - Undertake a pilot infrastructure toward the establishment of a distributed European network for Earth system modelling -> Co-ordinate European Climate Modelling efforts: Create a European service and management infrastructure for developing, coordinating and executing a long-term programme of European-wide, multi-institutional climate and Earth System simulations -> Develop a European Climate Modelling System: A portable, efficient and user-friendly Global Climate System based on actual models, and associated diagnostic/visualisation softwares => Recently funded by the European Union (4.8 MEuros)

7 The various tasks T1: Detailed definition of a standard physical interface (nature of information to be exchanged) for each component: atmosphere, atmospheric chemistry, land-surface, ocean, sea-ice, ocean bio-geochemistry, regional models) T2: Technical development of the coupler and model interface library that will allow an efficient transfer of the coupling information T3: Physical and technical interfacing of existing state-of-art models European models: coding rules and portability criteria T4: Development of common diagnostic/visualization tools and data management system T5: Development of a web-based interface for assembling models, for submitting of models on the different computer platforms, for controlling the database archiving and post- processing T6: Perform project applications to demonstrate the usefulness of the system

8 The coupler - Different state-of-the-art atmospheric and ocean models will be made available to PRISM, and will have to be slightly adapted, so that they can be easily coupled - Coupling through an improved version of the OASIS coupler (provided by CERFACS). Working prototypes of this coupler exist and are already widely used - It is likely that the PRISM system will adopt a default configuration, but with the aid of the computer vendors, the coupler will be enhanced (e.g., parallelised), so that the parallel and scalable coupler can be easily implemented on different computer architectures, where it will run efficiently

12 Exploitation and Dissimination - The infrastructure to be developed during the PRISM project is expected to be widely distributed among universities and research centres in Europe. - The PRISM system will be available to any scientist in the world directly from the web-site. A brochure (as well as information on the web) will help the potential users to understand the model system, and to implement it on different computer architectures. The PRISM system will also be installed on major supercomputer centres in Europe and elsewhere. - For example, possibility to collaborate with the «Earth Simulator» Program: - implementing the PRISM system on this machine - running multi-model, multi-component ensembles of climate simulations with PRISM on this machine
