2 Louisiana Purchase French foreign minister Charles de Talleyrand told American diplomats that the Louisiana Territory was for sale American diplomats – James Monroe and Robert Livingston negotiated and agreed on a price of $15 million. Americans bought the territory from France.

3 Louisiana Purchase (continued) Thomas Jefferson, President, was pleased with the purchase Senate approved the purchase in October 1803 The size of the U.S. doubled Purchase provided cheap and abundant land for farmers.

4 Lewis and Clark Jefferson wanted to explore west of the Mississippi River Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were selected to lead expedition Both were amateur scientists and had conducted business with Native Americans Left St. Louis in the spring of 1804

5 Lewis and Clark (continued) The men kept journals detailing what they saw and did on the journey Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, joined their group as a guide 18 months and 4,000 miles later they reached the Pacific Ocean Valuable information on people, plants, animals and geography were collected Americans were eager to go west
