5 What is an energy drink? Energy drinks are beverages whose producers advertise that they "boost energy." These advertisements usually do not emphasize energy derived from the sugar they contain but rather increased energy release due to a variety of stimulants and vitamins. Some energy drinks contain alcohol, a suppressant.

6 Statistics Main consumers: teenagers and young adults. 31% of 12- to 17-year-olds and 34% of 18- to 24-year-olds report regular consumption of energy drinks. Consumption begins at very early ages: 28% of 12- to14-year-olds report regular consumption of energy drinks. Teen consumption has grown rapidly since 2002. For 12- to 17-year-olds, rates increased from 18% in 2002 to 31% in 2006. Most people are not aware that some energy drink manufacturers are adding alcohol to their energy drinks. A 23.5-ounce can (Four Loko) may have an alcohol content up to 12% and is equal to drinking 5-6 beers* *http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/10/25/nation al/main6990079.shtml

9 Potential Impact on Learning Although there is debate regarding the overall risks and benefits of energy drink and moderate caffeine consumption, health researchers agree that caffeine consumption can have adverse health consequences, particularly at high doses. Among the most common negative effects are increased anxiety, panic attacks, increased blood pressure, increased gastric acid, bowel irritability, and insomnia. All of the side effects can have a negative impact on students’ learning. Students can become distracted, irritable, and tired, all causing students to lose interest in and/or not fully understand classroom tasks.
