Food Security Cereal production in the Sahel (excluding Nigeria) for the 2013-2014 season will reach 55.6 million tons, representing a six percent increase over the previous year and a 10 percent increase compared to the average production of the past five years; This output, however, masks disparities between countries. There are significant drops in output of more than 32 percent in western countries (Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Senegal) and increases of more than nine percent in coastal countries.

This level of food insecurity is the result of the negative impact of EVD on farming activities, trade, and livelihoods. These populations are at risk of further deterioration, and therefore strengthening their capacity for resilience is essential for preventing worsening outcomes. Projected situation: around 4,650,000 people will likely be under Stress at the peak of the lean season
