Background The DfE has removed the use of National Curriculum Levels The DfE has introduced a new curriculum in KS2 and KS3 (and KS1 and GCSE!)and subjects in our curriculum do not match the NC criteria.

Why is the National Curriculum being changed? To raise standards To focus on excellence and core skills, it is intended to be more challenging.

National Tests KS1 Teacher assessment at the end of KS1 informed by externally-set but internally-marked tests KS2 National tests at the end of KS2 in maths, reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and a teacher assessment of maths, reading, writing and science. The new SATs will assess to a higher level. A scaled score will be used - a score where 100 will represent the new expected standard. – Mental maths test will be replaced with an arithmetic test – No level 6 tests – All pupils will take just one set of tests – Tests will include a small number of questions that will stretch the most able pupils. GCSE’s - Coursework has been scrapped and the exams will be more challenging with a higher pass grade. Grades are to be re-labelled as numbers and there will be an additional grade so the range will be from 1 (low) to 9 (high).

SECONDARY Ready Government Policy Pupils to resit the test in Year 7 if they are not meeting the secondary ready standard

Life Without Levels…….. Schools have the freedom to develop their own assessment system – in fact there is NO SYSTEM for middle schools that can be bought in that has criteria and assessments for Yr5-8 in all subjects. Schools will be expected to account for the progress they make and how well pupils achieve

Life Without Levels – Assessment needs to….. Match the teaching in the classroom Assess pupils attainment and progress Be meaningful to all (pupils, teachers, parents, LA, Ofsted, Governors) Report to parents where pupils are in their learning journey in relation to age related expectations Robust and informative Motivate pupils Easily understood

LMS Assessment System – How it was developed….. The schools data system needs to have: Ability to show attainment and progress from Y5 baseline to exit Y8 Numbers – allocated to make analysis possible Words that clearly inform parents where their child is in terms of national expectations Clear progression ladder for pupils so that they can see they are moving forward – not static secure to secure A system where by assessments can be periodic rather than frequent tick boxes A system that informs school reporting both in terms of data and what pupils need to do next Various commercial data systems were reviewed: Symphony, Herts, Chris Quigley, Climbing Frames Aspects of Symphony and Climbing frames were combined to create a data ladder framework

ARE’S Age related expectations ARE’s developed from DfE and commercial bodies. Harder/more challenging that previous expectations Yr 4Yr 5 Yr6 Yr7Yr8 Yr9

LMS Assessment system Pupils will be assessed against ARE’s Pupils will be given a grade on a ladder The grades DO NOT equate to old NC levels Reports – Words will be used to describe how your child’s grade relates to national expectation – Entering – Developing – Secure – Exceeding

LMS Ladder New grade 1c 1b 1a 2c 2b 2a 3c 3b 3a 4c 4b 4a 5c 5b 5a 6c 6b 6a 7c 7b 7a 8c 8b 8a 9c 9b 9a 10c 10b 10a Pupils will receive grades in their books Teachers will use the words during lessons Progress will be measured – Expected progress will be for pupils to move a whole level per academic year E.g. 5b -6b

LMS Assessment system Baseline – 6c6c Autumn – 6b6b Spring – 6a6b Summer – 7c7c The above would be expected progress.

New System = Baseline testing! All subjects have been completing our trialled baseline testing since September. This will give us a starting point to track our attainment and progress. English and Maths have used external assessments as their baseline

THIS YEAR ONLY!!!! Baseline line testing at the beginning of September is as a result of our new system. Summer data will be used in future New entrants will have baseline testing
