Matsushita 2 Ionisation cooling Muon cooling is necessary for Neutrino Factory and crucial for Muon Collider Conventional cooling methods do not work;  = 2.2  s Need fast muon cooling method => ionisation cooling In principle ionisation cooling will surely work Energy loss in cooling material, then accelerate in RF cavity In reality it is not that simple Delicate technology and integration problem Need to verify by building a realistic prototype The MICE collaboration will build cooling channel, proof of principle

7 T. Matsushita 7 Target ISIS pulses at 50Hz with flat top for ~2ms. Electromagnetic driver dips target in and out in ~3ms. Oct-Nov 06 Target test successfull with 10 A target drive (40 A in the final system) Review on 6 Mar 07 Ballistic control of target critical, will be operated 3 months in beam before October run Drive mechanism Bellows Gate valve Beam pipe MICE Target Sheffield, Glasgow

Matsushita 13 Tracker Will sit inside solenoids, reconstruct helical muon tracks with 5 stations of 3 scintillating fibre planes Each station is composed of three planes of scintillating fibres laid out with 120 degrees radial spacing Each fibre plane is comprised of a ‘doublet-layer’ in which the fibres in the first layer of the doublet are interleaved with those in the second

Matsushita 14 Tracker UK, US, Japan Doublet-layer production complete at FNAL Station 5 built (UK, US, Osaka) – first production station – under cosmic test at FNAL Full production of station started in January 2007 Station assembly now up to 8th station, plan to have 10 stations by end of May (ICL) Fermilab technicians helping assembly Waveguide assembly started in Japan (Osaka) 1 st MICE VLPC cryostat now working stably with sufficient margin for UK 50Hz AC AFEIIt boards require new firmware for MICE; now under development by IIT/FNAL/RAL

Matsushita 15 Spectrometer solenoid Solenoid assembly now in progress at Wang NMR (Livermore, CA) 4 cryocoolers purchased and delivered to Wang Power supplies specified, to be ordered soon Mandrels built and Winding of passed vacuum tests 1 st solenoid main coil nearly done as of two weeks ago ETA: Nov-Dec 07 LBNL

Matsushita 16 Calorimeter KL calorimeter (4 X0 of lead sci-fibres sandwitch) => first recognition of electrons Under construction at ROMA III, delivery in October 2007 SW calorimeter (100 x 100 x 80 cm deep scintillator ranger for muon ID) First prototype layer under construction in Trieste Aim to operate in 2008 for full downstream PID capability  60 L=60  65 tracker Spectrometer solenoid TOF and shielding KL calorimeter SW calorimeter L=90 Rome III FNAL/Trieste/Geneva

19 T. Matsushita 19 Summary Much progress in all fronts MICE will start phase I data taking in Fall 2007 Steps I, II will allow beam tuning, first measurement of emittance and verification of systematics Things are getting exciting!
