Students for a Healthier Community If you don’t serve your community, who will?

Our purpose: To provide awareness to UAB undergraduates about local non-for-profits that improve the health of the under-served in Birmingham. Provide volunteering with these organizations Provide an accessible organization that ANY major or GPA can join, we usually provide carpooling, we just need those who are passionate about serving others!

About us We were founded in the Spring of 2010, and became active the Fall of 2010. We work with long- standing initiatives, as well as have random volunteering events through the semester with other organizations. We have bi-weekly meetings with various non-for-profits as the speakers.

Volunteering, Long-standing We work with: Cahaba Valley Healthcare P.E.E.R. Inc’s 5 th grade homework lab in East Lake First Light Women’s Homeless Shelter.

Cahaba Valley Healthcare We participate in their free health screenings that travel around Birmingham. They are for those without insurance. We usually help with the nutrition table for children; however if you have a specific interest in optometry or dentistry you can participate in those screenings there! Usually at 2 pm on every other Sunday. We carpool!

5 th Grade Tutoring Lab This is with PEER Inc., a non-for-profit at East Lake United Methodist Church. We go every Monday and Wednesday from 3-5 PM. Carpooling is at 2:45 in the Blazer Hall Circle. You have to be trained before volunteering, (we can set that up!) We tutor for the first hour, then do exercises or other health-related activities for the second hour (gardening, art, etc.) Also participate in Farmer’s Market. If interested in leading a dance class, let us know! Contact sallydover@gmail.com to set up.sallydover@gmail.com

First Light Women’s Homeless Shelter We volunteer every 2 nd Saturday of the month at 3:00 PM. Carpooling at 2:45 in the Blazer Hall Parking Lot. Each month we will have a themed activity for the ladies. We are open to suggestions! No training required. They are very excited to have us, and need the extra social interaction.

Fundraising This semester, our fundraiser is to collect used, gently worn or new toys for Cahaba Valley Healthcare. They have a box of toys that children play with while their parents participate in the screening; however, these are in desperate need of being replaced. Bring these toys to any meeting or volunteer event!

Now what to do? If you are interested in becoming a member, you will need to fill out a membership form, and provide a one-time $10 due. We suggest that you volunteer ten hours per semester to remain in good standing. If you are volunteering with other organizations that promote our purpose as well, let us know and we can count it toward your hours.

Keep updated with us! Make sure you sign in. Using that we will add you to our e-mailing list. Visit shc.yolasite.com to keep up with upcoming events. Visit our FaceBook page or our page on BSync as well!
