Aim of the lesson To develop your creative thinking skills To use your imagination To understand how to use audience and purpose when thinking creatively To work as a team To know who Guru Gobind Singh was and what he did.

The task..... Guru Gobind Singh became famous for starting something known as the Khalsa. Here is an eye witness account of how he did it!

The Story Part One It was during the festival of Vaisakhi in 1699 and all of the Sikhs gone to Anandpur to see Guru Gobind Singh. There were thousands of Sikhs there. Guru Gobind Singh began to talk to us and tell us that we all needed to be brave and be prepared to defend our faith because there were people who wanted to kill all of the Sikhs. He then took out a really sharp sword and began to wave it about. He asked if there was anyone who was willing to die for their faith. Suddenly there was absolute silence, no one said anything. Then a man a few rows in front of me put up his hand and said that he was willing to die for his faith.

The Story Part Two So he went with the Guru and they disappeared round the back of the tent. A few minutes later the Guru returned but the man was not with him. The Guru held up his sword and it was dripping with blood! “He has killed him” somebody shouted. The Guru simply looked out at the crowd and once again said “Who is willing to die for their faith?” To my amazement suddenly............

Your Task Your task is to work in groups to produce a two minute play about this story with your own ending. However you have to do this for a certain audience. You can choose from: People your own age Old Age Pensioners Young Children You also need to include what the purpose of your play is. You can choose from : To make people laugh To scare people To be realistic You have fifteen minutes to produce your play!

The Real Ending Guru Gobind Singh actually asked five times for people who were willing to die for their faith, and five times someone volunteered. Each time they would disappear and the Guru would return with a sword dripping with blood. After the fifth time people started to get angry with the Guru. However he had not killed the volunteers, he had only pretended to, in order to test their faith. He brought them all out from behind the tent all wearing new robes. They became the first members of the Khalsa.

Plenary Did you team work well together? Explain why/why not?. What other lessons do you have to use creative thinking skills in? Will you use your imagination at any other time today? Where else in your life do you have to consider audience and purpose? (what about other people too?) Why do you think Guru Gobind Singh is important to Skihns?
