1 Photosynthesis Label the diagram: Carbon Dioxide Glucose Oxygen Water
Chloroplast

2 Rate of Photosynthesis
IB Environmental Systems and Societies Topic 2 Internal Assessment

3 Learning outcomes All of you should be able to:
Identify the abiotic factors that affect photosynthesis. Carry out the pre-lab to calculate the rate of photosynthesis. Most of you should be able to: Describe photosynthesis in terms of inputs, outputs, processes and energy transformations. Some of you might be able to: Explain how changing these abiotic factors will affect the rate of photosynthesis.

4 Photosynthesis Summarise photosynthesis in terms of the following:
Inputs Outputs Processes Transformations

5 Inputs

6 Outputs

7 Processes Chlorophyll traps sunlight of different wavelengths
The energy is used to split water molecules Hydrogen from water is combined with carbon dioxide to produce glucose

8 Transformations Can you write the word equation for photosynthesis?
Light Energy Chemical Energy Can you write the word equation for photosynthesis?

9 Photosynthesis Inputs of Water, Carbon Dioxide and Sunlight
Light energy is trapped by the chlorophyll inside the chloroplasts Energy is released by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen Oxygen is released to the atmosphere The hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to make glucose.

10 Now your turn!! Lesson 1: Pre-lab
Carrying out a standardised practical using handouts I will give you. Thinking about how you could adapt the experiment for an Internal Assessment . Lesson 2: Using your Planning Lab Training Sheet you will work in teams to design a practical investigating the rate of photosynthesis. Lesson 3 + 4: You will carry out the practical and collect data as a team. Lesson 5: I will show you how to start processing the data to analyse the rate of photosynthesis. Drawing the graphs needed to process the data. Lesson 6 We will use Excel to process the data further and create our final graphs. Lesson : 7 We will go through writing a discussion, evaluation and conclusion for this Internal Assessment. Lesson : 8 and 9 You will have a double period to finish of the write-up of your internal assessment and ask any final questions you might have. You will finish the rest for homework and bring it to the lesson in one week where you shall self-assess them.

11 Pre-lab Cut 10 leaf discs and remove the plunger from the syringe.
Place the leaf discs into the syringe. Holding a finger over the syringe-opening, draw back on the plunger to create a vacuum. Let off vacuum. You will probably have to repeat this procedure 2-3 times in order to get the disks to sink. Pour the discs and solution into the beaker.
