IAF - Background IFRRO – International Federation of Reproductions Rights Organizations. Balance between Authors – Publishers Strengthen Authors Position inside and outside IFRRO Regular Authors meetings showed the need for an independent World Wide Authors Organization – IAF.

IAF - ISSUES The national and cross-border concentration of media ownership has resulted in the greater use of standardized contracts (often buy-outs) which limit the rights that authors retain Competition law is cited to prevent authors and performers from benefitting from collective bargaining arrangements Pressure from publishers and producers for presumption rules to give automatic transfer of copyright in their favor Weakening support for the copyright protection of authors’ works The authors’ voice at the international table to influence decision making.

IAF – Balanced agreement The legal framework should ensure protection against unfair contracts and afford a fair incentive for creators. Balanced agreements would enable more authors to create and maintain an ongoing influence on, and income from, their work. Leading to less monopolization, more diversity, greater knowledge sharing and greater choice.

IAF - elements for success Authors organizations need to co-operate (amongst the different creator groups) at national, regional and global levels. Publishers and producers need to view authors as equal partners and co-operate in order to regain public support for adequate copyright protection. The authors’ voice must be heard to ensure a shared understanding of the right balance between the importance of copyright, and straightforward, legal access to culture, information and knowledge to the benefit of users and consumers.

IAF – Work I Increase our representation of authors and performers throughout the world (in national and international bodies). Strengthen the authors’ positions in the ongoing partnership with publishers and producers, in bodies such as IFRRO. Building a network of authors’ organizations by building IAF. Providing the network with an infrastructure enabling communication, discussion and exchange, through meetings and homepage.

IAF – Work II Providing speakers and participants to international conferences, meetings and decision making bodies, the voice of the creators can be heard and can influence. WIPO. Through the exchange of views and ideas a powerful message advocating authors’ rights can be passed to Governments and international bodies for consideration whenever authors’ rights are being legislated or reviewed by legislative bodies. National and international.
