2 2 Why registration? To determine the “vertical” location of the MS –Vertical: Which frequency within a given sector is the MS in –Horizontal location (I.e. which sector is the MS in) is determined through current registration mechanisms in the standard »Timer-based, Zone-based, Distance-based registrations, etc. »Other BS algorithms Why do we need to know which frequency the MS is in? –To page the MS for incoming calls, to deliver MS directed messages, etc. –In current standard the frequency MS resides in is known unambiguously through hashing algorithm –But with the introduction of BCMCS, MS may reside in a different frequency than the hash-to-frequency Ericsson Registration Bit is used to determine how many mobiles are currently listening to a BCMCS_FLOW_ID in a given sector –For dynamic BCMCS purposes. –Independent of “vertical” BCMCS registration

3 3 Current Proposal BCMCS_FLOW_ID based registration Timer-based registration of BCMCS_FLOW_IDs –When MS monitors a BCMCS_FLOW_ID, MS informs the BS periodically through BCMCS Registration Message –Based on the BCMCS_FLOW_ID registered and LPM table, BSC knows which frequency the MS resides in –Value of timer provides trade-off between number of RL registrations and number of frequencies the BS must send FL messages in »Timer is not needed if “channel swapping or frequent start/stop” scenarios are not a concern. In this case, MS simply registers each time start & stop monitoring a BCMCS_FLOW_ID BSC passes BCMCS_FLOW_IDs to MSC –When MSC has page for MS, MSC sends page request to one or more BSCs –MSC decides which BSCs to send it to based on current horizontal location determination algorithms –Each BSC uses the BCMCS_FLOW_IDs provided and the local LPM to decide where to page

4 4 Alternative Proposal Frequency based registration Register with BS whenever frequency changes –Whenever MS leaves hash-to-frequency to monitor BCMCS_FLOW_ID, MS sends BCMCS Registration to indicate new frequency –MS re-registers only when moving to another frequency A timer may still be required if “ping-pong” between sectors with different frequency is a concern BSC passes current frequency to MSC –When MSC has page for MS, MSC sends page request to one or more BSCs –MSC decides which BSCs to send it to based on current horizontal location determination algorithms –Each BSC uses the current frequency provided to decide where to page the MS Advantages: –Regardless of how many BCMCS_FLOW_IDs MS monitors, only a single frequency is registered
