Organization Structures Are Complex

Today we will show you… New organizational concepts in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 How to use these concepts to effectively model businesses Integration of organizational concepts throughout the application How system implementers can extend the organization model to fit their needs

Components in action today

Pains and challenges Charlie – President Thinks about the business from operating and managerial standpoint Wants to structure organizations to align with business strategy Needs to implement policies by organization structure Sara – CFO Needs a view of the organization based on statutory entities Wants to separate statutory or legal structure from operating structure Implements financial controls on legal entities Susan – Order Processor Has limited understanding of the company’s operating and statutory structure Needs to enter transactions in an intuitive way with minimal training Simon – System Implementer / Consultant Needs to configure application to represent organizational concepts Needs to extend for industry-specific organization concepts

Extending the Organization Model Framework Development TaskType Create new custom operating unit typeModel Define data model to include types of organizations as foreign keys and update queries Model and Code Create organizations as backing entities for financial dimensionsModel Create extensible data security policiesModel Create business policy type using business policy frameworkModel and Code (Optional) Build user experienceModel and Code

Top 10 Tips from the Session Configuration instead of customization – Implement your organization structure using modeling tools instead of code customization Use the organization model to represent internal organization – External hierarchies cannot be modeled Model multiple hierarchies if your implementation has complex profit & loss internal reporting needs Don’t create a hierarchy for every purpose – Reuse hierarchies for multiple purposes as appropriate Create departments to model intersection between your legal entities and business units – Departments as dimensions will allow rollup to legal entities (statutory reporting) as well as business unit (performance reporting) Create balanced hierarchies where each level contains the same type of operating unit – Create dummy departments if needed for balance Do cost allocation of shared service departments such as HR, IT, or Legal if you want to account P&L with business units or legal entities Hierarchies are date effective – Model and validate hierarchies in test environment before publishing Sites and Warehouses are not modeled as organization units by default – Create departments for them as appropriate for the business Apply appropriate defaults to dimensions based on organization units on transactions

What we showed you today… Configuration instead of customization Model organizations without writing code Multiple hierarchies support complex organizations Use organization model for implementing Data Security Business Policies Reporting Rollup Flexible and powerful Easy to configure based on organization needs Extend organization model to address industry-specific concepts
