3 Be the teacher. Teaching someone else the information is a strategy that really helps many students to understand information on a deeper level. Join or start a study group. There is power in numbers so learning from your peers can be a tool which is often overlooked. Getting fresh perspectives on a topic from other students can help you learn it more thoroughly. Study Strategies That Work On your own With a friend/group Use index cards to write key concepts/terms/information. Use acronyms/ mnemonic devices. Arrange the first letters of keywords into a sentence or nonsense word (the sillier, the better). Make study notes during lectures and while doing the readings. Review your notes and highlight key information, underline important facts, make notes in the margins, etc. Dual Credit Tool Kit: Study Tips and Test Taking

4 Tips for Test Taking Before the testDuring the testAfter the test  Be prepared: Attend class, take notes and study!  Get a good sleep.  Avoid cramming.  Eat a healthy meal prior to the test.  Arrive early so you don’t feel rushed.  Avoid other students if they are panicking – panic is contagious!  Write down any difficult information right away.  Watch your time! Focus on the questions worth the most first.  Answer every question (partial marks are better than zero).  READ questions carefully! Double check your answers at the end.  Ask yourself what might you change in your study plan for next time?  Add up all the marks to double check.  Figure out where you went wrong and how to improve.  School is a learning process; one test does not make or break your experience. 5 Helpful Hints: Different Types of Questions  For short answer/essay questions make a rough outline to organize your ideas. Look at the marking scheme to ensure you have included enough evidence.  For multiple choice questions, read the question and think about the answer in your head before reading the responses. Go through each response and see if it matches your idea. Put a question mark (?) beside responses that you’re unsure of, and a checkmark beside responses that might be correct. Read through all responses before selecting your final answer.  For true or false questions, read the question carefully. Look for clues. Trust your gut. Guess if you must.
