States of Matter Physical and Chemical Changes Classifying Matter

Chemistry is the study of matter.

Matter is anything that has mass and volume.

Solids Liquids Gases

Have a definite shape Have a definite volume Atoms close together and moving very slowly

Have an indefinite shape Have a definite volume Atoms not as close and moving quicker

Have an indefinite shape Have an indefinite volume Atoms spread apart and moving quickly

At 100°C, water becomes water vapor, a gas. Molecules can move randomly over large distances. Below 0°C, water solidifies to become ice. In the solid state, water molecules are held together in a rigid structure. Between 0°C and 100 °C, water is a liquid. In the liquid state, water molecules are close together, but can move about freely.

All matter can exist in all three phases depending on the TEMPERATURE.

To absorb heat means to add heat!

To release heat means to cool or lose heat.

The change of a solid to liquid is called… MELTING

The change of a liquid to a gas is called… BOILING OR VAPORIZATION

The change of a solid to a gas is called… SUBLIMATION

The change of a gas to a liquid is called… CONDENSATION

The change of a liquid to a solid is called… FREEZING
