1 What Children Want and Need What Young People Want
What Young People Need What Young People Want From Tract by A. Webster – adapted points to include all young people –tract is entitled WHAT TEENS WANT Home, Marriage

2 What Children Want and Need
Introduction Children today have a difficult time growing up Drug dealers, porn salesmen, movie producers, gamblers, schools, tobacco and liquor industries work hard, spend money and do what is necessary to win the impressionable minds of our kids Home, Marriage

3 Introduction The family and the church needs to be keenly aware of just what our children face We must be willing to work harder than anyone else to give our children what they really need

4 Introduction This is a lesson for all Christians-parents, grandparents, Bible class teachers, preachers etc. because we can and should influence young people with whom we come in contact

5 Encouragement The late childhood and early teen years are often a discouraging time Young people at this age tend to be hard on themselves when they make a mistake They need to know that we care and that all of us make mistakes

6 Encouragement Is. 40:30-31 Col. 3:21  ”Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.” Parents & all adults don’t be too stern --- overly demanding --- hard to please---this drives the child to resentment & will fill him with discouragement

7 Teaching Young people act like they know it all
Their greatest need is to learn the Bible The things that Christian adults have known for years is still new to them

8 Teaching They want to know what Christ expects of them--how they should act They want to know how they can be free from the guilt of sin Psalms 119:9-11 Proverbs 1:4

9 An Example To Follow Our lives are a better teacher than our lips
Teens need a role model = a person whose example is one that pleases God and one that young people should follow

10 An Example To Follow Proverbs 23:26 Mt. 19:16, 20-21
Jesus taught a lesson on priorities and showed by His own life how it applied Lk. 2:49 Jn. 9:4

11 Correction Discipline and correction are important to young people
They want to be corrected They need guidelines They must learn the difference between right and wrong--between good and bad

12 Correction Children will test us here-- but we must remain steadfast in discipline Proverbs 23:13-14 Physical chastening can actually deliver a child from premature death---a death which might result from a rebellious life

13 Correction Proverbs 22:15 Children are not mature morally, spiritually or physically Physical maturity comes with age, diet and exercise

14 Correction Spiritual maturity = the ability to know right from wrong comes with the development of the mind—at this point one is “accountable” There is also spiritual growth one enjoys as a Christian

15 Correction In the immaturity of youth there is the time of foolish behavior, - conduct that can be dangerous physically and morally Sometimes the rod of correction is required

16 Correction Rod of correction Two types of discipline:
1. One is instructive 2. The other is corrective Corrective discipline should help the child to see the harm that certain behavior can lead to

17 Correction Proverbs 13:24 If we love our children we will administer instructive and corrective discipline as required “Spare the rod and spoil the child” Children should be corrected and disciplined as soon as the offense happens

18 Conclusion We must require our children to do what we tell them to do—but we must not be so strict that no one could live up to our expectations

19 Conclusion We can all encourage, teach, be a good example and offer instructive discipline The corrective discipline will come primarily from the parent
