Instructional strategy  A simulated letter is a letter that is written by an author that assumes the identity of a historical figure.  A simulated letter is written to a selected audience.  The voice of a simulated letter portrays the historical time period or event.

Practice Activity  The teacher will read a section from Martin’s Big Words The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. written by Doreen Rappaport.  The teacher will model and use the shared pen technique to complete the graphic organizer for a simulated letter.  The letter will be written as Martin Luther King Jr.

This is often called the “meat” of the letter.  Closing: The closing is at the end of the letter. 13. Practice Activity  The students and teacher will participate in a shared pen activity to develop a rough draft of a simulated letter using their graphic organizer.
