1 NPO – Non-Profit Organisations : this doesn´t mean their inflows never outweigh their outflows, it just means any ´surplus´ is re-invested in the company rather than issued as reward to their owners. ´Some defintions linked with this ´third sector´… (a lot of initals..)‏ NGO´s – These are one type of NPO´s and stands for Non-Governmental Organisations. They are set up to run for the benefit of others in society. Their leaders are usually not appointed by, or accountable to, society at large. Also known as PVO´s Private Volantary Organizations - 2 main types….

2 (1)Operational NGO´s - established from a particular specific objective. They focus on one area & take direct action eg Oxfam on poverty alleviation, UNICEF – disaster relief (2)Advocacy NGOs – tend to focus more on influencing people. Slightly more aggressive and operate through rallies, lobbying, mass demonsrations etc. Eg Greenpeace, Amnesty International A great strength of NGO´s is they are run by highly committed people. QUANGO – Quasi-Autonamous NGO, or semi-NGO´s Funded by the government but run by people independent of the government. Eg National Tourist Trust Should seek synergy, blending the best of both sectors

3 CHARITIES A registered NPO with the key function of collecting donations from individuals/organisations in order to support a cause that is beneficial to society. They offer their 'paying customers' little more than a sense of ´pride in particpation´ so marketing is a key skill. Charities do actively seek a surplus, however it is not classed as ´profit´ because it is not distributed as reward to owners/workers.
